The world has lost one of its brightest stars. Dolly Parton, the country music legend whose voice, wit, and generosity made her a global icon, has died. She was 80.
Parton’s nephew Brian Seaver announced her passing in an Aug. 25 Instagram video recorded at the country legend’s request. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
Just four days earlier, Parton said she was still recovering from unspecified health issues she had neglected while caring for her husband, Carl Dean, before his death in March 2025. She had also recently experienced dizziness and dehydration and canceled several appearances while receiving treatment.
Her sister, Freida Parton, previously took to social media asking fans around the world to keep Dolly in their prayers. In the post, she said she stayed up all night praying for her sister and encouraged others to join her in lifting up the singer. “I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been lead to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me,” she wrote on October 7.
Born in Sevierville, Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings in the Smoky Mountains to become one of the most celebrated entertainers of all time. Over her six-decade career, she wrote and recorded countless classics, including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “I Will Always Love You.” Her career spanned music, film, and television, but her enduring warmth and humor made her a household name far beyond country music.
A Legacy of Generosity
Parton’s impact stretched far outside the stage. She founded the Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which became both a beloved tourist destination and an economic boon for her home state. Through her Imagination Library program, she gifted over 200 million books to children worldwide, cementing her legacy as one of the entertainment industry’s greatest humanitarians.
Her philanthropy also included major contributions to health care and disaster relief, most notably funding Vanderbilt University’s research that helped develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
Dolly never shied away from supporting the LGBTQ community as well, famously reminding critics that “God made us who we are, and it’s not up to us to judge.” She consistently championed marriage equality and transgender rights, while also expressing gratitude to the queer community for standing by her.
In the early ’90s, she even tucked a quiet declaration of acceptance into her album Eagle When She Flies. The song “Family” painted a picture of kinship that stretched beyond bloodlines, naming faith, sexuality, and even struggle as part of the same human circle, and insisting that everyone belongs.

In a 2023 conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, she made it clear that acceptance was non-negotiable: trans people, she said, “cannot help” being who they are “any more than I can help being Dolly Parton.”
She went on to describe her own circle as a tapestry of identities, “transgender people, gays, lesbians, drunks, drug addicts,” stressing that she knows and loves them all. For Dolly, judgment was never the point. “If there’s something to be judged, that is God’s business. But we are all God’s children and how we are is who we are.”
Personal Loss
In March 2025, Parton’s beloved husband of nearly six decades, Carl Dean, passed away. The couple’s enduring marriage was famously private; Dean largely avoided the spotlight, but their love story became an anchor in Dolly’s life and a source of inspiration for her fans. Friends close to Parton often remarked that Dean’s quiet support was one of the keys to her longevity in both career and spirit.
