The best Xander Harris line proves he was Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s secret weapon all along. As a key character introduced in the pilot episode and a series regular during all seven Buffy the Vampire Slayer seasons, Xander is integral to the show. Despite not having the powers of the titular character or becoming a witch like Willow Rosenberg, he is always a core member of the Scooby Gang, along with bringing invaluable loyalty and humor to the story.
While he is an important and consistent part of the series, Xander is generally not as beloved as many other characters, though, especially when compared to fan-favorites like Buffy Summers, Willow, Rupert Giles, Tara Maclay, and Spike. This comes after Dawn got her hopes up about being a potential Slayer, only to learn that this isn’t the case.
As someone who does not have powers like Buffy or Willow, Xander understands what it is like “to live so near the spotlight” but not be at the center of it. Most importantly, this allows him to see the full picture of what is happening and help in ways that others can’t, and he recognizes that this is also Dawn’s gift. Xander beautifully articulates his secret power that flew under the radar for nearly the entire series, and more importantly, uses it to make Dawn feel seen and understood when she is at a particularly low point. Such compassion and insight makes for the best version of Xander, and it is satisfying to hone in on this in the seventh and final season.
One of the many things Buffy the Vampire Slayer is about is the experience of being an outsider and how to navigate that. The show understandably explores this the most through Buffy’s eyes, but it is crucial to also explore through the perspectives of other characters, like Xander. Even among outsiders, it is easy to feel alone, unvalued, and unseen at times, but he helps Dawn see that there is a far more profound truth at work.
Xander Was The Heart Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Scooby Gang
Xander’s “the one who isn’t chosen” monologue is a reminder that he is the heart of the Scooby Gang, who keeps the group going during some of their deepest struggles and keeps on fighting despite not having powers and even when seemingly outmatched. A perfect example of this is when he stops Dark Willow’s apocalyptic ritual in the season 6 finale through his love and lifelong bond with her, a feat that no one but him could have achieved.
While many of Xander’s contributions go unseen, his friends do love him and recognize that the group does not work without him at the center. In season 5, episode 12, “Checkpoint,” Buffy defends him in front of the Watchers Council, who call him “the boy.” Buffy’s retort is that “The boy’ has clocked more field time than all of you combined. He’s part of the unit.” He has nowhere near the resources or knowledge that the Watchers Council has, but he has repeatedly put his life on the line to help his friends and save the world nevertheless.
Xander absolutely has his faults, but his greatest dialogue and other shining moments confirm why he remains an essential, enduring, and even underrated part of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
