Julie Andrews Not Returning for Princess Diaries 3 Alongside Anne Hathaway

Shut up and listen: Julie Andrews won’t be making her royal return.

As Anne Hathaway prepares to wear her crown in the upcoming The Princess Diaries 3 as the now-Queen Mia Thermopolis, the 90-year-old confirmed that she would not be reprising her role as Clarisse Renaldi.

“I’m not going to be in it,” Andrews shared with Today.com in an interview published Aug. 10. “I think the story is slightly different, and I’m not quite sure how they’re dealing with that. But it’s too late for me to do it. I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia.”

As she put it, “It’s her story. It’s not really mine.”

Plus, Andrews isn’t interested in being in front of the camera at all anymore.

“I think I’m retired, really, would be about the best description for that,” she explained in an interview with InStyle published Aug. 10. She noted that the film’s creative team “asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it. It was very very hard to say ‘no,’ but I did.”
