Heartstopper Forever, the feature-length finale set to wrap Nick and Charlie’s story, will move forward without Olivia Colman, who played Nick’s mom, Sarah Nelson, in the first two seasons. Netflix confirmed the role will now be taken over by Anna Maxwell Martin, marking a significant shift for one of the show’s most beloved characters.
Why Sarah Will Return in the Final Chapter
For longtime viewers, Sarah is not just a background parent. She is a key emotional anchor in Nick’s life. Her warmth, honesty, and quiet support helped shape some of the show’s most memorable moments, especially when Nick came out as bisexual and was met with immediate love and understanding. That relationship became a defining part of Heartstopper’s identity.
Creator Alice Oseman made the call to keep Sarah in the story, even without Colman’s return. As the finale explores more complex emotional territory for Nick, removing that support system would have felt incomplete. Recasting the role allows the story to maintain its emotional continuity while still moving forward.
The Olivia Colman Effect
There is no way around it. Colman brought something special to Sarah. Her performance felt natural, grounded, and instantly comforting, making her one of the most loved parents on screen in recent years.
Her absence comes down to scheduling, but the impact is still significant. Fans have a strong connection to her portrayal, and stepping into that space is no easy task. It is less about replacing Colman and more about continuing the character she helped define.
Meet Anna Maxwell Martin
That is where Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Ludwig) comes in.

“We are overjoyed to welcome the incredible Anna Maxwell Martin into the role of Sarah for Heartstopper Forever,” Oseman told Tudum. “Anna perfectly embodies Sarah’s gentle, down-to-earth energy, and it was magical to witness her scenes with Kit Connor during the film shoot. I can’t wait for Heartstopper fans to experience her interpretation of Sarah Nelson.”
Also joining Martin is Derek Jacobi (Last Tango in Halifax; I, Claudius) in a cameo role.
A Bigger, More Emotional Goodbye
Heartstopper Forever will reunite Kit Connor and Joe Locke with the rest of the ensemble for one final story. This time, the series is closing out with a feature film instead of another season, giving the narrative space to fully explore what comes next for these characters.
The film is expected to dive deeper into the realities of growing up, relationships, and the uncertainty that comes with moving forward.
“Everyone in school knows Nick and Charlie. Everyone knows they’re going to be together forever. But Charlie’s busy with his bid to become head boy. And while Nick is preparing to leave for uni, he’s starting to wonder who he’ll be… without Charlie.”

The author also recently shared the cover art for Volume 6 and celebrated the end of the webcomic, where it all began. “I’m feeling a lot of feelings!!” she wrote on Instagram. “I’ve loved every moment of making this comic. Thank you so, so much to everyone who has been here for the journey. Heartstopper will always be precious to me.”
The final film will dive into Volume 6, which is set for release in July 2026. However, Heartstopper Forever will not be an exact remake. So movie-watchers can expect a few surprises along the way!
