The Marvel Multiverse has a wide variety of Venom variants, but there’s one version that’s ready to take over the franchise in a full-blown horror reboot. While Venom’s Marvel Comics stories have usually leaned into some frightening imagery, a new twist on the character digs into the horror genre with a spooky symbiote take on iconic movies like The Exorcist.
Marvel offers some of the spine-tingling story in the preview for Edge of Venomverse #1, by the creative team of Clay McLeod Chapman, J. Holtman, Phillip Sevy, Nathan Stockman, Dax Gordine, and more.
The comic is a great pitch for a Marvel Comics horror movie adaptation, and an exciting option after Tom Hardy had his last dance with the franchise.
Edge of Venomverse Proves that the Symbiote Could Scare Up Success in Horror’s Exorcism Subgenre
The Exorcist is just one iconic example from the demonic possession and exorcism subgenre within horror, and Edge of Venomverse proves that its tropes work perfectly with Venom. Collecting stories from the Infinity Comic of the same name, its new version of Venom appears in just two chilling chapters, both written by Clay McLeod Chapman with art by Phillip Sevy.
The story hasn’t revealed how Earth-888’s Charlotte found the symbiote and only teases the events that lead to her attempted exorcism, but it’s easy to understand how the alien species can be misidentified as a demonic presence. Venom has had other Marvel horror comics because of how gnarly the symbiote’s form can appear, and its brutality as a lethal protector.
After Sony’s initial symbiotes saga ended with Venom: The Last Dance, Charlotte’s Venom proves that the franchise could take a strong horror turn. The character hasn’t really appeared since appearing in the original Infinity comic, but after Charlotte’s chapters conclude again in Edge of Venomverse #1, it seems Marvel Comics could do more with this scary take on the symbiote.

Edge of Venomverse is actually a strong anthology horror comic with a Marvel Universe twist, and the exorcism of Venom is just one of many thrilling adventures in the series. As Marvel Comics collects the stories in print in time for the Halloween season, the publisher is also showing how easily the Venom franchise could take over the horror genre.
Attempts at scary superhero movies like Brightburn or The New Mutants weren’t very successful with audiences or critics, but that shouldn’t dissuade any franchise from trying to make it work in the future. Especially with something like Venom, the comics prove that the Marvel Universe is easily capable of housing some exciting and bold new ideas in the horror world.
