Ariana Grande isn’t mincing words on her latest release.
The Grammy-winning singer unveiled her eighth studio album, Petal, on Friday, July 31, alongside a cinematic music video for its title track that transforms years of public scrutiny into a biting satire about fame. Rather than quietly addressing the commentary that has followed her career, Grande leans into it, delivering one of the boldest visuals of her career.
Released alongside the full album, the “Petal” video arrives as Grande closes out the North American leg of her Eternal Sunshine Tour and enters a new creative era following her acclaimed turn in Wicked.
A Hollywood Audition Turns Into A Nightmare
Shot entirely on VistaVision, a widescreen film format popularized in the 1950s, the music video stars Grande as Pepper, an aspiring performer auditioning at the fictional Fame INC.
She joins dozens of hopefuls waiting to perform before a panel of older male executives. After her first audition, Pepper walks away holding an evaluation sheet stamped with a blunt verdict: “Not good enough.”
Determined to earn their approval, she returns with an entirely new look. Dressed in a black bodysuit and bold red lipstick, she’s met with another dismissal. This time, the panel writes, “NO SEX APPEAL! Should get some work done.”
Pepper tries again, arriving in a cow-print dress with exaggerated, artificial-looking breasts in a pointed jab at impossible beauty standards. The response only gets harsher. The executives dismiss her as “DESPERATE.”
The sequence escalates with each failed attempt, underscoring how the standards placed on women in entertainment constantly shift while remaining impossible to satisfy.
Grande Reclaims The Narrative
The video’s sharpest moment comes during Pepper’s final audition.
Before she can finish singing, one executive interrupts her.
“You give off this feeling that is completely … what’s the word? Inauthentic.”
Another piles on.
“The way you used to be, I miss that.”
Then comes an even more cutting remark:
“Do you got some personality disorder going on?”
The dialogue echoes criticisms Grande has faced throughout her career, from scrutiny over her appearance to online debates about whether she’s changed too much. Instead of responding directly, she channels those remarks into fiction.
Pepper finally reaches her breaking point, pulling out a chainsaw and turning the audition room into a horror movie. Covered in blood, she walks back through the waiting area as the aspiring performers erupt into applause.
The closing moments add another twist. The entire bloody sequence is revealed to be a film within the film, with Pepper now starring in the production instead of begging for approval. It’s an ending that blurs the line between performance and reality while suggesting that success doesn’t necessarily silence criticism, it simply changes the stage.
A New Era With Petal
The title track serves as the second single from Petal, Grande’s first studio album since Eternal Sunshine, which topped the Billboard 200 for three weeks. The project follows lead single “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and signaled strong anticipation for the new record.
The album also arrives after a career-defining stretch for Grande, who expanded her résumé with her role in Wicked before returning to music full force.
