The Palais was overflowing with emotion Wednesday night as Rami Malek received one of the most powerful responses of this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his leading role in The Man I Love.
Following the film’s world premiere, audiences reportedly applauded for eight uninterrupted minutes, with Malek appearing visibly emotional while soaking in the overwhelming reaction.
Directed by celebrated queer filmmaker Ira Sachs, the drama transports viewers to downtown New York during the late 1980s. Malek stars as Jimmy George, a daring performance artist facing the realities of an AIDS diagnosis while still desperately chasing intimacy, beauty, and creative expression in the middle of a city forever changed by loss.
Set in the vibrant underground arts scene of the era, the film explores the tension between mortality and joy, centering on a man who refuses to stop loving, creating, and desiring even as illness closes in around him.
The premiere quickly became one of the festival’s standout events. Malek arrived alongside Sachs and cast members Tom Sturridge and Luther Ford. Rebecca Hall and Ebon Moss-Bachrach were not in attendance.

Celebrities including Halsey and Demi Moore were also spotted attending the premiere, adding even more excitement around one of Cannes’ buzziest LGBTQ+ titles.
One of Cannes’ Most Talked-About Queer Films
The Man I Love is one of only two American films competing for the Palme d’Or this year, making it a major moment for queer storytelling on one of cinema’s biggest stages.
The film marks Sachs’ return to the Cannes competition following Frankie, while continuing the director’s long history of emotionally intimate queer filmmaking, as seen in projects like Passages.
For Malek, the project represents a dramatic new chapter following acclaimed performances in Bohemian Rhapsody, Oppenheimer, and The Amateur. But this performance may prove to be one of his most vulnerable yet.
Early reactions from Cannes critics have already positioned The Man I Love as a deeply moving film, applauding Malek’s stunning performance.
