Spider-Man Fights Demons in L.A. in New Miniseries | Screen Rant

New York’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is getting a change of scenery in a brand new five-issue miniseries called Deadly Neighborhood. The series is set to follow the web-slinger as he finds himself away from his home base of New York City for once. Instead, he will be taking a trip to the City of Angels: Los Angeles, California.

The City of Angels nickname is particularly ironic in this case as Spider-Man won’t be facing off against the typically colorful, boastful villains out of his rogues gallery. Instead, Spidey will be taking on actual demons.  The demons roaming the streets of L.A. include the infamous Demon Bear, an entity with close ties to Native American heroes who has clashed with the New Mutants in the past.

In an exclusive reveal of the miniseries, SYFY Wire calls this upcoming tale a “revolutionary dark take” on the Spider-Man character that is unlike anything that we have seen before featuring the character. In the same preview from SYFY, it is revealed that the limited series will boast a writing staff of former Black Eyed Peas rapper Taboo and frequent comics collaborator B. Real. Meanwhile, Juan Ferreyra (Spider-Verse: Spider Zero) will be helming the art. Art covers will be drawn by Rahzzah (The Immortal Hulk), Peach Momoko (Marvel’s Demon Days), Josemaria Casanovas (Wastelanders, The Amazing Spider-Man), and Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire). In addition to revealing a June 1st release date, SYFY also reveals some cover art for Spider-Man: Deadly Neighborhood.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Spider-Man character’s Marvel debut, so to celebrate by taking Spider-Man out of the city that he’s spent so long protecting is a bold and interesting move. It’s also something of an inspired choice as writer Taboo is basing the California setting on his childhood home in Los Angeles. “Being the first Indigenous writer to co-write this new Spider-Man comic with my brother B. Earl is a huge step in opening more doors for underrepresented talent to shape universally known comic characters,” Taboo said. “As a lifelong fan of everything Spider-Man, this is a childhood dream come true.”

When Taboo and I found out we had the go-ahead for a new Peter Parker adventure, we began earnestly weaving a tale that would lean into our strengths of pulling from Indigenous storytelling while balancing the intersection of pop culture,” Earl said. “Since we’re both in LA, we decided to bring Spidey out to sunny California…but spin a fantastic tale of dark horror that ultimately will turn our friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man DEADLY!

Beyond just the setting, surrounding Spider-Man with demons is itself a different change of pace for the character. While Spidey is no stranger to encountering the supernatural, it isn’t exactly his expertise. More often than not, Spider-Man’s adventures place him in the realm of science, with a rogues gallery comprised of men with mechanical octopus arms and genetically modified goblins. This new miniseries is already proving to be an exception to the rule unlike anything which audiences have seen up until this point. For those interested in seeing such a drastic change of setting and tone for the character, Spider-Man: Deadly Neighborhood #1 is expected to hit both digital stores and local comic book shops as soon as June 1st, 2022.
