New Blood Hints Angela Will Die From Dexter’s Mistakes

Movies

Iron Lake’s police chief Angela Bishop may have made a mistake in starting a relationship with Dexter, with New Blood episode 1 hinting his mistakes will kill her. New Blood picks up nearly a decade after Dexter’s original series finale, in which Dexter Morgan faked his death, abandoned his son Harrison, and began working as a lumberjack in Oregon under a new alias. While Dexter hasn’t killed in 10 years, his Dark Passenger and murderous habits creep back up in New Blood after Harrison returns, an irresponsible resident tests his urges, and a new serial killer terrorizes Iron Lake.

New Blood shows that Dexter has only been in Iron Lake for a few years, but his closest relationship is with the police chief, Angela Bishop. While the relationship was fairly innocent and genuine before New Blood’s timeline, Dexter returning to killing in episode 1 makes his relationship with Angela very similar to his dynamic with Deb for most of the original series. Now that Angela is assigned to find the person who killed Matt Caldwell, Dexter has to maintain his relationship with her while also hiding the fact that he’s the man she’s looking for. Angela may have been a positive figure for Dexter acclimating to his new life in Iron Lake, but her police position, romantic relationship with Dexter in New Blood, and lack of knowledge about his past signal danger for her fate.

With Dexter killing again in New Blood episode 1, the odds of those he loves getting hurt again are high. As his inner conscience and Dark Passenger, Deb continually reminds Dexter that the reason they’re in Iron Lake is that everyone he gets close to dies. Deb lists off names like Rita, LaGuerta, Harry, Doakes, and herself, pleading for Dexter to remember that this is why he ran away and that raising Harrison could mean killing him. These comments were mostly meant to deter Dexter from bringing Harrison back with him, but they also connect to Angela. As the one New Blood character that Dexter has formed an extremely close relationship with, Angela is in a dangerous position to be the person he loves that dies due to his mistakes.

Since Angela is also in the police department and actively leading the investigation around Matt Caldwell, and likely the new serial killer later on, she stands as the character closest to Dexter that would be collateral for his personal hunt against the murderer. If New Blood progresses like Dexter’s original series, Dexter Morgan will make it his personal mission to find and put down the new serial killer, but this also means Angela could get in the middle as collateral. Additionally, it’s theorized that Matt’s father Kurt Caldwell is Dexter season 9’s new serial killer, which makes Angela’s death more likely considering they’re already opposed to one another.

Dexter moved to Iron Lake, an extremely small and isolated town, in order to stop forming relationships with others to prevent those he loves from dying, but killing again and falling in love with Angela makes this plan irrelevant. When killing Matt Caldwell, New Blood also showed that Dexter is extremely rusty with his kill ritual and practices, meaning he could easily make a mistake that places Angela in a fatal situation. However, since New Blood is attempting to show Dexter has grown and would likely sacrifice himself to save those he loves now, it’s possible Angela won’t actually have to die in the series. She’s in a dangerous position simply by her occupation, so adding Dexter’s rusty serial killing into the equation hints that making it out of New Blood alive will be increasingly difficult for Angela.
