Spider-Man: No Way Home Has a Huge Comic Problem to Overcome

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #72

The MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home has a huge comics problem it’s going to need to overcome due to its influx of villains, and it’s an issue Peter Parker is currently dealing with on a grand scale with his current Sinister War event. Across four main issues and its tie-ins from Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man series, the Webslinger is facing more villains at one time than he ever has on his own before, facing 6 Sinister Six teams simultaneously. While it’s certainly an impressive spectacle, it does create some issues with the logic of his latest battle, and Spider-Man’s next film could be running the same risk with its large number of rumored and/or confirmed villains.

In Marvel’s Sinister War event from Nick Spencer and a variety of all-star artists, the demonic villain Kindred has made deals with or manipulated these sinister teams with the singular goal to kill Spider-Man. As a result, the Webslinger has been thrown back and forth and beaten down by the classic Sinister Six, the Savage Six, the Sinister Syndicate, the Superior Foes, the Wild Pack, and the brand new Sinful Six. Each team has its heavy hitters, many of whom have had Peter Parker on the ropes by themselves in past one-on-one battles. However, after multiple issues, Spider-Man is somehow still standing despite facing all these villains on his own.

However, having nearly every foe in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery coming to end him once and for all in an almost 40-to-one fight, questions of logic arise. Essentially, Spider-Man being able to survive while disregarding the number of the hits he’s taken has begun to diminish his villains’ impact. By not being able to kill him, the message is starting to be communicated that each villain only has 1/40th of Spider-Man’s power, which just doesn’t seem right. Likewise, Spider-Man will most likely be facing the most villains he ever had at the same time in No Way Home with a rumored multiversal Sinister Six, and the film could very well face the same problem.

While Spider-Man could very well lose and meet his end as Sinister War reaches its conclusion – as has been potentially teased with the coming of Spider-Man Beyond - it’s hard to argue against the fact that he probably should’ve been taken out much earlier given the sheer number of villains he’s faced. The easy solution to win (and have it be believable) is for Peter to get some help in his fight, whether it be from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, or his fellow Spider-People such as Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and more. However, in No Way Home’s case, the perfect solution would be the arrival of two Spider-Men in particular: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Peter Parker who could aid Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in his fight.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Spider-Man handles the conclusion of Sinister WarWill he finally get some help to make his fight make more sense, or will he actually lose like he probably should have much earlier? Either way, it’s certainly an obstacle that Spider-Man: No Way Home will have to overcome with its own collection of villains when it comes to theaters on December 17th.
