Suicide Squad & GOTG Unite In Imagined James Gunn Movie Crossover

Movies

A new fan poster imagines The Suicide Squad characters uniting with the Guardians of the Galaxy in a James Gunn crossover movie. As an independent filmmaker turned blockbuster extraordinaire, writer/director Gunn has made a name for himself bringing eccentric and often-overlooked comic book characters to the big screen amid jukebox soundtracks. He famously championed Star-Lord’s Walkman in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and bestows glory upon canon-fodder villains in DC’s The Suicide Squad.

Gunn is in the unique position of being involved in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. After being fired by Disney back in 2019, rival conglomerate Warner Bros. quickly reached out to the director to work his magic on a DC property. Naturally, Gunn was drawn to John Ostrander’s unpredictable, quirky, and insane Task Force X. The Suicide Squad is a standalone sequel/soft reboot of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), with oddballs like Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, and Peacemaker joining well-known characters including Harley Quinn. Ever since Disney rehired Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (and the multiverse has permeated popular culture), fans have pondered the idea of seeing characters like Groot and Harley meet.

The official Fandom account on Twitter recently shared a fan poster promoting the ultimate multiverse mash-up of the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. The piece takes fans “Into the Gunn-Verse,” which is a clever play on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and, perhaps, DC’s abandoned Snyder-Verse. Check it out below:

Marvel and DC characters have crossed over on special occasions in the comics but have never done so on the big screen. It would certainly be fun to see Groot interact with King Shark in The Suicide Squad‘s R-rated sandbox. Gunn has even talked with “the powers-that-be at Marvel and DC about making a movie that could crossover his two franchises. Unfortunately, he said the chances of ever seeing that come to fruition were unlikely but not impossible.

The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy are competing franchises that could one day go head-to-head at the box office. WB and Disney aren’t going to be collaborating any time soon. A Gunn-centric, one-off crossover would ultimately prove too complicated. However, Gunn is already using a slew of MCU actors in The Suicide Squad (including a cameo by Mantis actor, Pom Klementieff), and DC seems to be building a “Gunn-Verse” with its Peacemaker series and other teased spinoffs. While fans may never see Star-Lord and Peacemaker’s egos clash, similar dynamics, as well as Gunn’s unique tone and style, will entertain continue to entertain regardless.
