There are a few common reasons why a MacBook Air or Pro might not be charging properly when plugged in, or at all. However, identifying what exactly is causing the problem will make it easier to identify the right fix and many of the most common checks can be completed quickly and easily. Here’s an overview of some of the most common issues, and fixes that might help to solve any problems when charging a MacBook.

The MacBook Air and Pro are popular options for anyone looking for a new laptop, and especially those already invested in Apple’s ecosystem. In terms of battery life, there’s not too much difference between the 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro models with the Air offering up to 18 hours and the Pro providing up to 20 hours of battery per charge. For those that opt for the larger 16-inch MacBook Pro model, the maximum battery per charge decreases to 11 hours.

With limits on how long a MacBook can remain powered for, charging is an important and routine chore. In cases where a MacBook Air or Pro isn’t charging when plugged in, the first thing Apple recommends trying is simply unplugging the power adapter from the outlet and then plugging it back in again, making sure to wait a few seconds in between. Apple also explains that if the MacBook starts charging but then stops, it is worth unplugging it from the wall socket and waiting at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in again. If the MacBook still continues to charge poorly or not at all, a few other checks will be required.

Firstly, it is worth ruling out whether the charging issue is a problem with the MacBook or the actual power outlet. The easiest way to check this is to switch to a different power outlet. If this results in the MacBook charging again, then there is likely an issue with the power outlet. If using a power strip to maximize the number of devices that can be connected to a power outlet, it is also worth bypassing the strip and connecting the MacBook directly to the outlet so that any issues with the strip can also be ruled out. The power outlet cause can also be double-checked by plugging a different device in to the same outlet. If the other device works fine or starts charging, then the issue is likely to be with the MacBook Air or Pro.

In cases where a MacBook user is still encountering a charging problem, then it may be worth restarting the MacBook and checking for any software updates. Checking and applying any outstanding updates can be a way to fix many performance issues with a device, including charging problems. If the problem still persists, then there could be an issue with the actual power adapter or charging cable, resulting in either one or both needing to be replaced. In worst-case scenarios, the MacBook user may want to take the notebook to an Apple store for a service or battery replacement.
