Zack Snyder Planning Justice League Theatrical Screenings For Charity

Movies

Following the successful launch of the Snyder Cut on HBO Max, the director has plans to bring Zack Snyder’s Justice League to the big screen via screenings for charity. The story behind this film extends far back to 2017 when the original Justice League film released. Following Snyder’s departure from the movie before it was complete, Warner Bros. tasked Joss Whedon with finishing the project. He worked on making a shorter film with a lighter tone overall. Whedon’s completed Justice League was critically reviled and received a mere 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. Those who wished to see Snyder’s version of Justice League launched a full-scale campaign to #ReleasetheSnyderCut. They bought billboards around Hollywood, placed advertisements on bus stop stations, and trended multiple hashtags on social media.

For three years, people who criticized this relentless campaign doubted that a version of the Snyder Cut even existed. Then, in May of 2020, came the announcement the long-awaited director’s cut of Justice League would finally be released. The film debuted on HBO Max on March 18, with many finding it an improvement over the original film. However, some are disappointed by the streaming-only release, especially since the Justice League Snyder Cut is in a 4:3 aspect ratio meant to be seen in IMAX. As of early March, there were reportedly no plans for a theatrical release of the movie, despite Snyder hoping for one.

However, some will be delighted to know Snyder now has plans to make this a reality. In an interview with the ReelBlend podcast, the director detailed his plans for theatrical screenings of the Snyder Cut:

They have given me a handful of charity screenings in IMAX. So as we go forward, I’m going to do a handful of charity screenings — a couple in color, a couple in black and white — and that’s my plan. As we head toward the fall, with the Nerd Queens, we really want to do Zack Con Two, or Snyder Con Two. The idea there would be to do an IMAX weekend where we would do Man of Steel, BvS and Justice League as sort of a three-day event and try and get as many of the people who made the movie and the cast and whoever will help us out as a huge charity event. A huge kind of fan gathering with cosplay and the whole… like a real celebration of the whole thing.

A charity event this big would be amazing to see. Snyder’s Justice League fans have already donated more than $500,000 to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, so charity has always been a big component of the campaign. Making a huge fan convention out of the movies he has created would no doubt raise a lot more money. It certainly helps many are eager to see the Snyder Cut on the big screen as the director always intended.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a film with a very long and complicated history. It’s appropriate to end it with a giant celebration of movies and goodwill, especially since there are no plans for sequels at this time. As Snyder continues to work on the screenings for charity and possible event for the fall, hopefully more details will be revealed soon.
