“Joy” by Dustin Powell

Can you feel the joy, singer Dustin Powell sings with passion and devotion in the new Christian pop gem “Joy”. In a song that could easily fit under the Christmas tree this holiday season, Powell’s tune is a year-round worthy listen. Charming and super catchy, “Joy” features a Powell’s crooner-level vocals and a subtle piano bed. This rousing music bed and bright, full sound makes this gem one of the gifts of the season. Powell is a natural front man and just the right soul to make the season bright.

Originally from Kansas and now based in Nashville, Tennessee, Powell’s infectious enthusiasm is matched by the love pouring from the entire backing band. “Joy” pulls from several genres, as mentioned above the Christian contemporary sound is definitely represented. When I close my eyes and listen to this song I also hear pop rock, holiday and even some soul/R&B. Powell sings as though he’s singing from the biggest stages in the world – his voice is bigger than this song. Can you feel the joy, ringing through the mountains everywhere…born is the great I am, he sings. I love the messaging of this song, and the natural empathy that exudes from Powell’s voice is an additional gift. Put some love in his heart, Powell sings, asking listeners to spread the love.

Powell’s voice blends exceptionally well with his backing band. The music bed rock naturally bolsters his harmonies and he really belts out the chorus. Besides the subdued piano, the song features peppered percussion and a solid bass guitar. The electric guitar, too, is subtle. I thought for a second I would hear more of the piano, but it’s very delicate. I think Powell is going for the sound of a bouncy, lofty almost heavenly piano. The backing music has the makings of a happy dance, as Powell’s voice hovers over the current. Powell’s voice could be compared to the likes of Michael Bublé meets Michael W. Smith meets Dan Haseltine (Jars of Clay). I can hear, and it’s ever-so-slightly a twang. It must be Music City rubbing off on the newcomer. He already has that Nash Vegas twang. Near the end of the song I had goose pimples when the tempo picks up, a small female choir joins in. Powell himself could be his own choir – his enthusiasm goes through the roof. As the song continues, his passion and delivery is just awe inspiring. He really believes this song – he’s not just singing lyrics. While listening to “Joy” the truth is that Powell emits exactly that – joy.

“Joy” has all the trimmings and makings of a song that should be celebrated year round, not just from November to December. I’m impressed by Powell’s personality, his candor and gregariousness in the song. I think he shows a lot of spunk. While other artists are forcing the issue in holiday songs, he comes across genuine and very likable. Kudos to newcomer Dustin Powell and his delightful “Joy”. It’s definitely a song to add to your playlists.
