Next-generation consoles and gaming wouldn’t quite be complete without the ability to stream online via services like Twitch and YouTube. The Xbox Series X comes with the ability to stream to Twitch via the app, with the option to just capture what takes place on screen or to hook up a separate USB webcam and also capture the player’s setup and reactions.

All players will need to get started is an active Twitch account to link with their new console. The new Xbox Series X controllers come with a new center Share button that will allow players to capture screenshots and short videos right away, but broadcasting has not yet been built into this new feature. Instead, the Xbox button will bring up the option to open streaming apps and start broadcasting. Here’s how to set up the new Xbox Series X and Series S consoles for streaming on Twitch.

How to Set Up Online Streaming on Xbox Series X/S

Not All Xbox Series X Games Playable on Xbox One

Prior to setting up online streaming, players will need to check their privacy settings and make sure they have allowed broadcasting of gameplay. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Press the Xbox Button.
  • Navigate to Profile & System > Settings > General > Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety.
  • Choose Xbox Live privacy. Then select View details & customize and choose Game content.
  • Scroll right to find You can broadcast gameplay. Choose Allow.

If players want to capture their gaming setup and their reactions during the stream, they will need to have a separate webcam. Unlike the new PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X does not have an official camera for streaming. It does, however, have a list of recommended options.

Players need a webcam that has a YUY2 or NV12 format to broadcast. Most Logitech and Microsoft LifeCam webcams will have one of these formats, making them the best option for streamers. To set up the webcam, players simply need to plug the USB into the Xbox Series X system.

From there, players will need to make sure they have the Twitch app installed on their system. Downloading the app should be simple. Press the Xbox button again to open the guide. Select Store, then choose Apps. Players can find Twitch and select Install.

Once Twitch has been installed, players can log in either before or after they start their game. To do this, press the Xbox button and select My games & apps > See all > Apps. Find and select Twitch to pull up the app. Players may also see Twitch as a recent app in the game menu that appears when the Xbox button is pressed.

If players have not yet logged in, they will need to do so by choosing Log In in the top navigation bar in the Twitch app. They may need to punch in a code that gets sent to their mobile device for a faster and more secure log in. After this, players can choose Broadcast and set up their stream. They will have access to a variety of options, including things like where to place the webcam feed on the screen, bitrate, and frame rate. They can select Start Streaming and begin the broadcast from there.

Players should also be sure to download the Xbox mobile app, which is where screen captures and video clips will be uploaded as they are taken with the new Share button.

Right now, the Xbox Series X does not appear to support streaming via YouTube or Facebook Gaming. It is not clear whether that will change with updates but based on Microsoft’s partnership with Facebook, this addition is possible.
