The very first update to the chaotic battle royale game Fall Guys is adding a new level and making an old one much less likely to appear. The goofy competitive game tasks players with navigating bizarre obstacle courses and competing to be the last jelly bean standing. Despite only being out for a week, the game has sold staggeringly well, exceeding even the developer’s expectations and, consequently, causing rather severe overcrowding on servers.
Fall Guys has become a cultural sensation. It’s already had the biggest launch of any Devolver Digital game thus far, which is impressive, as Devolver has some excellent titles under its belt. The titanic success of the game has buckled servers, hit Twitter trends, and even drawn some truly bizarre cross-promotions. Brands like KFC have submitted fanart of the game and Chuck E. Cheese himself, namesake of the American brand of themed restaurants and entertainment centers, even streamed the game recently on Twitch. Something about this goofy competitive romp has drawn fans by the thousands.

Developer Mediatonic isn’t just sitting back to enjoy its success, either. As the Fall Guys Twitter account announced, the game’s first official update hits tomorrow, August 12th, and adds Jump Showdown, a level fans loved from the beta. The level sees players competing on a rotating platform made of individual wedges that fall away as time goes on. In addition to keeping their footing, players will have to contend with spinning bars that can push them into the abyss, and rude opponents who can also push them in.

In addition to bringing this beloved level into rotation, Mediatonic is lowering the likelihood of players encountering one of the game’s least popular levels, Royal Fumble. This mode tasks players with pursuing a tail that they must pull off of their opponent and stick to themselves. The player who keeps the tail at the end of the match wins. Players criticized this level for forcing them to contend with clunky grab mechanics, and they will likely be more than happy to see it appear less often. Various bug fixes and quality of life updates have also been introduced in the update. An error that prevented the end-game crown from being grabbed on the level Fall Mountain has been patched, as have some physics issues. Mediatonic has already promised more updates in the future which will add even more new levels, as well as character costumes.
It’s not common to see a game become as much of an overnight sensation as Fall Guys. Fans have responded in a big way to the game’s cute art style and its unique, cartoonish take on battle royale combat. It’s heartening to know that Mediatonic hasn’t been resting on its laurels, either. This update shows that the developer is listening to player feedback and actively working to improve its game. If that keeps being the case, Fall Guys will likely be a success for a long time to come.
Fall Guys is available now on PlayStation 4 and PC.
