Supernatural’s “O Brother Where Art Thou” sees Amara – AKA The Darkness – raising a little Hell to get God’s attention. Supernatural has been running since 2005 and follows the adventures of sibling duo Sam and Dean Winchester. The Winchesters have been hunting supernatural and demonic creatures after being trained by their father John from a young age, and as the show continued it widened the mythology, introducing more hunters and pitting the boys quite literally against the forces of Heaven and Hell.
Supernatural will come to an end in 2020 after 15 seasons and over 300 episodes. The Winchester brothers have more than earned a break, but fans will no doubt be heartbroken when it comes to a close. Episodes could range from extremely goofy to downright disturbing and leads Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki really came to inhabit their characters over the years. While there’s always the chance Supernatural could continue in the form of a movie or spinoff, there don’t appear to be any future plans.

Supernatural season 11 episode “O Brother Where Art Thou” opens with Amara confronting a preacher and his followers in a park, and scorching them all to death with lighting to get the attention of her brother God. She later does the same thing in a church, after mocking a priest’s blind faith in this religion. Meanwhile, Sam is still having visions – apparently from God – about returning to Lucifer’s Cage in Hell. Sam believes this is the answer to stopping The Darkness, which Dean is understandably dubious about.
Still, he follows his brother’s plan and they seek out Crowley’s help for a way into Hell, who in turn kidnaps his mother Rowena and forces her to help. Supernatural’s “O Brother Where Art Thou” then splits the Winchesters up, with Sam and Rowena researching the Book of the Damned while Dean looks into the trail of bodies left by Amara. She suddenly appears to him and they teleport to an isolated location. She explains she’s killing God’s followers to get his attention and that he created churches as a monument to his ego. She wants to take back the world from his control, so everyone can feel the “bliss” Dean does when he’s with her.
Dean tries and fails to kill Amara, as do a group of angels; she then transports Dean back to where they first met as the skies open up and the angel’s rain thunder down on her. Elsewhere on Supernatural “O Brother Where Art Thou,” Sam reluctantly ventures into Hell when he can’t raise Dean on the phone. Rowena casts a spell that lets Sam talk to Lucifer in his cage, who says he will help stop Amara in exchange for Sam becoming his vessel. Sam naturally refuses, even if it is the only option, only for Rowena’s spell to fail – seemingly by her own design – and Sam is transported inside the Cage. Sam is calm as he had visions of this happening, only for Lucifer to break the horrifying truth – HE was the one sending visions, and God was never communicating with him. Sam now finds himself trapped inside Lucifer’s Cage once again.
