RuPaul’s Drag Race: Katya Talks Worst Snatch Game Winner

Movies

Veteran of RuPaul’s Drag RaceKatya, who competed on both season 7 and All Stars 2, has shared what she thinks is the one Snatch Game impersonation that did not actually deserve to win the challenge. Ever since competing on the show, Katya has mostly focused on different projects, such as the WOW Presents Plus talk show UNHhhh – co-hosted by Trixie Mattel - and acting gigs on shows like Tales of the CityEastSiders, and Love, Victor. In 2019, Katya was featured in an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and recorded an interview with RuPaul for his What’s The Tee? podcast. However, the beloved queen is not known for commenting on ongoing Drag Race seasons, which makes this recent statement a rare treat for the fans of the show.

On Drag Race season 7, Katya impersonated Suze Orman for the Snatch Game. That year, Ginger Minj‘s Adele and Kennedy Davenport‘s Little Richard were both chosen as the Snatch Game winners. However, given the judges’ considerations, Katya was the third queen who was in the Top 3 for that challenge. Then, along with Alaska‘s Mae West, Katya won the All Stars 2 Snatch Game with her impersonation of Bjork. Given how well Katya did on both Snatch Games she competed on and how successful she has been with her comedy career, the queen is certainly well-equipped to comment on how recent contestants have done in the challenge.

During a very candid interview with Shut Up Evan, Katya offers a broad analysis of how it is not entertaining to watch queens attempting to be funny when that is not their strength. To illustrate her point, Katya vaguely references a particular Snatch Game winner who she thinks did not deserve to win the challenge. Katya says, “The person that won it was not that great. But they were fine.” In typical Katya fashion, the queen then admits that she is talking about RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9 contestant Alexis Michelle, who won the Snatch Game for her impersonation of Liza Minelli. Katya explains that she knows many great Liza impersonators, but that Alexis’ attempt was just “fine.” Then, Katya offers, “You don’t wanna have mediocrity rewarded, and I certainly don’t wanna see drag queens failing. Because we often fail. Failure is the nature of our job.”

In the same interview, Katya is also asked if she would ever compete on an All Stars season featuring the best-performing queens the franchise has ever had, including winners. Using RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race as an example, Katya explains that she would be interested in one-off appearances on the show, but that she isn’t compelled by the idea of competing and watching other great queens fail.

Katya’s days of competing on RuPaul’s Drag Race seem to be over, but the season 7 Miss Congeniality winner and All Stars 2 runner-up has been making several appearances on different TV shows and giving very candid interviews as of late. Moreover, the queen is releasing the book Trixie and Katya’s Guide to Modern Womanhood on July 14, marking her first foray into the world of publishing.
