Listen to Drake and Lil Wayne Discuss Dark Lane Demo Tapes, Fatherhood, More

Music, News

Drake made an appearance on Lil Wayne’s new “Young Money Radio” program on Apple Music last night, where he and his mentor discussed his new mixtape, fatherhood, and more. After a brief discussion of how Drake’s family is doing—including his dad, Dennis Graham, who is apparently “working on an album that’ll never come out”—Wayne and Drake talk about the recently revealed photos of his son Adonis before eventually getting to Dark Lane Demo Tapes.

“It was just a lot of joints that sort of were floating around, songs that people just kept asking me about or for. With the whole pandemic thing that’s going on, we’ve been playing more music on [Instagram] Live. So, there was joints that got played on Live and then there was a couple leak situations that happened a little earlier in the year. For a second the shit felt like ’09 or 2010 or some shit, I couldn’t believe how much music was leaking—not just from me, from every artist.”

He went on, “It’s an interesting time for us all, as musicians, to figure out how this works and what people need. And I just felt like people would appreciate maybe a body of something to listen to as opposed to just one isolated song. So yeah, I just tried to float that out there, set the tone for the album, and the album is being worked on every day. Like I always say, in every interview I do: I learn from the best, I’m in the gym seven days a week because of the man I’m on the phone with.”

The two also discuss “From Florida With Love,” a new song from Dark Lane, which sees Drake recount the time Wayne previewed his then-unreleased Tha Carter III for him and Kobe Bryant on a tour bus. “ I knew exactly where the whole world was about to be focused for the next however many years,” he said. “In the second verse, I say it hurts me that we’ll all never get to reminisce about that moment. But yeah, rest in peace to Kobe and Gigi of course.”

At the end of the interview, Wayne and Drake discussed their shared desire to collaborate again. (The last time the two appeared on a track together was “Family Feud,” from the former’s Dedication 6 mixtape.) Listen to the full interview below.
