After a long battle with illness, we’ve learned today that the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki has passed away at his home in southern Poland. He was 86 years old.
Krzysztof Penderecki’s work earned him three Grammy wins throughout his career, most recently in 2017, and he was also nominated for two Primetime Emmys in the 1990s.
On the horror front, several of Penderecki’s most eerie and haunting compositions were famously used in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
Penderecki’s work was also featured in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, Inland Empire and “Twin Peaks,” as well as Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stars and various other projects including Twister, Children of Men, Shutter Island, “Black Mirror” and Ready Player One.
Penderecki is survived by his wife, Elzbieta, daughters Beata and Dominika, and son Lukasz.
