Slithering out of the silence like a python, the first few strands of melodic ribbonry that we encounter in “Fanning the Flame,” the new single from Chloe Tang, are easily enough to evoke a moody sense of seduction in anyone listening to this latest release from the acclaimed pop singer, but it isn’t until our star begins her serenade that we start to realize just how powerful a performance she plans on delivering here.

Tang’s demeanor is confident, but her vocal execution hints at a humble reticence as sexy as her swinging beats are, and as the track continues on, it becomes harder to discern where her end of this song’s heavy-handed harmony starts and that of the backing band concludes.
“Fanning the Flame” runs a modest three minutes in total length, but despite its limited running time, it manages to unfurl some of the biggest and boldest beats of its singer’s career so far, all while showcasing a trademark vocal that her longtime fans have come to appreciate as much as they would pure gold. Though there’s a bit more muscularity to the beats in this single than I might have preferred – only because it inarguably takes some of the spotlight away from her dynamic range – I think that Chloe Tang is sounding like a serious popstar in this release.
She’s coming onto the scene amidst one of the most competitive eras in recent memory, but with the moxie she’s showing off in this track, I think she’s going to gain a lot of new fans as 2020 begins to take shape.
