The dominos have begun to fall as festivals are being canceled and studios are closing their doors. This morning Paramount Pictures pulled A Quiet Place Part II from their release schedule and now Disney is following suit.
20th Century Studios/Marvel’s The New Mutants and Searchlight’s horror pic Antlers are off the release schedule, reports Deadline, adding that Disney is now looking at potential 2020 dates in regards to where the titles would be scheduled next.
This is a heavy blow for the Josh Boone-directed The New Mutants, which was finally getting a theatrical release on April 3rd after a nearly two-year delay. Is there a world in which the film just drops onto Hulu or Disney+?
In the film, “Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.”
The mutants include Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie, a.k.a. Cannonball; Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair, a.k.a. Wolfsbane; Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot, a mutant with the ability to absorb and channel solar power; and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, the Native American telepath also known as “Mirage”.
Alice Braga also stars as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on.
As for the Guillermo del Toro-produced Antlers, directed by Scott Cooper, the film was slated for release on April 17th and had all kinds of hype going into its release.
Based on the short story “The Quiet Boy” by Nick Antosca (“Channel Zero”), in Antlers, a small-town Oregon teacher (Keri Russell) and her brother (Jesse Plemons), the local sheriff, become entwined with a young student (Jeremy T. Thomas) harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences.
