Spider-Man: Far From Home – Tom Holland Didn’t Know Post-Credits Twist

Movies

Tom Holland has revealed that he didn’t know about the final post-credits twist of Spider-Man: Far From Home. The slightly inconsistent and out-of-character behavior of Nick Fury in the film was explained in a post-credits scene seeing him and Maria Hill being revealed as Skrull commander Talos and his wife Soren (both first seen in Captain Marvel) in shapeshifted form. Fury himself was then shown on a spaceship crewed by Skrulls, for reasons yet to be made clear. Ironically, in the comics Talos is notorious among the Skrulls for a genetic mutation rendering him unable to alter his form.

Secrecy around MCU movies is paramount, with actors often being highly circumspect in interviews to avoid revealing anything about the films. This was particularly emphasized during the releases of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, with the hashtag #ThanosDemandsYourSilence liberally utilized over social media to plead with moviegoers to avoid spoiling the experience for those who were yet to see the films. Spider-Man: Far From Home was no exception, with all of the film’s marketing portraying Mysterio as a supporting hero of the film, keeping the midway twist of his being a manipulative villain secret from the portion of the audience who were completely unfamiliar with the character and his MO.

Tom Holland’s declaration that he didn’t know about the Fury/Talos twist in advance was reported on by Comic Book, covering a panel at ACE Comic Con where he and Jake Gyllenhaal were interviewed about Far From Home. During the panel Holland was asked if he knew ahead of time the post-credits scene’s final revelation about Fury’s presence in the film, to which he responded “I’m trying to think if I did know that. No, I probably didn’t know.” Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal revealed he only found out about a month before the film was released.

Holland has gained something of a reputation as a spoiler machine, often dropping details about films due to getting too excited about them to reign himself in. Sometime it’s minor things like stating that a trilogy of Spider-Man movies were planned before it had been officially announced. Other times it’s moderate details like mentioning that Peter goes into space in Infinity War and mentioning the Quantum Realm being an aspect of Endgame (which, to be fair, many people were speculating about anyway). Sometimes he reveals more serious details, such as introducing a screening of Infinity War by coming on stage and declaring “I’m alive” to a roomful of fans who were yet to see the film and so didn’t know Peter was dusted. He even managed to tell Chris Pratt the plot of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom before he saw the script, which Holland was aware of due to having known its director J. A. Bayona for years, as he directed Holland in 2012 disaster movie The Impossible.

The simplest explanation for Holland not knowing about Far From Home’s post-credits twist is that he simply wasn’t told. Since he wasn’t a part of the scene there was no need for him to know, and being so notorious for blurting out spoilers, it was probably considered prudent to not mention it to him lest he let something slip and spoil the reveal of the movie’s final, final end.
