Netflix releases the Earthquake Bird movie trailer and poster for the upcoming thriller starring Alicia Vikander. Based on the novel of the same name by Susanna Jones, news of an adaptation first began to surface in 2016. In 2018, it was reported that Vikander was in talks to join Earthquake Bird as the lead. Now, audiences have a new glimpse of Vikander’s first major role since Tomb Raider.
In the novel, which opens in a Tokyo police station, Lucy Fry is being questioned over the murder of her friend Lily Bridges. She’s more evasive than helpful in her responses. As the story unfolds, however, the truth about what happened comes into focus. The novel, which won awards, blended romance and jealously with mystery and estrangement. Earthquake Bird won’t be out until November. It will arrive in theaters on the first of next month before being made available for streaming on Nov. 15. But fans of the novel and those intrigued by it will find that the adaptation brings the noir vibes of Jones’ work to life.
The Earthquake Bird trailer released by Netflix begins with Lucy (Vikander) being asked about her whereabouts on the night of Lily Bridges’ (Riley Keough) disappearance. Staring up at her interrogators, Lucy looks somewhere between vacant and determined. The story then shifts further back to show how Lucy might have ended up in such a dire situation. Although it packs in a lot of information, the trailer is careful not to reveal too much or show too much of any one scene. Befitting the film as both a psychological thriller and a mystery, questions and possibilities are raised that might ultimately prove to be deceiving. Earthquake Bird, which is set in 1989, is produced by Ridley Scott. The film also stars Keough as the ill-fated Lily Bridges and Naoki Kobayashi as Teji, the photographer at the center of a love triangle between Lucy and Lily. Wash Westmoreland is the movie’s writer and director. His other credits include Still Alice, which won Julianne Moore an Oscar for Best Actress, and Colette.
Netflix has several other notable film titles that are on the verge of release. Notably, there’s the movie follow-up to Breaking Bad in El Camino. There’s also Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Steven Soderbergh’s The Laundromat. In the company of such distinguished directors, and compared El Camino’s built-in anticipation, Earthquake Bird is a more lowkey release for the streaming service. But it’s likely to have long-term appeal for any subscriber looking to get their fix of mystery and crime.
