Jason Momoa is a blind post-apocalyptic warrior in the trailer for the new Apple TV+ series See. The streaming wars are only just starting to heat up now that Apple is joining the fray to offer their own alternative to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and all the many other streaming options that are either available now or getting set to arrive. Launching on November 1st, Apple’s addition to the ever expanding streaming universe will cost $4.99 per month, which sounds like a bargain compared to some of the other services out there.
Of course, if Apple TV+ hopes to catch on it will have to offer content that justifies the price, and competes with what the other services can offer. To this point, the biggest new offering to be previewed is The Morning Show, a series set in the world of TV news starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell. Apple has also previewed Dickinson, a series based on the life of the famously reclusive 19th Century poet Emily Dickinson, as well as the space series For All Mankind. Other reported future offerings include a reboot of Amazing Stories, a Time Bandits remake from Taika Waititi, a CIA drama series with Brie Larson and something from Fast & Furious director Justin Lin.
Now, Apple TV+ has dropped a trailer for another upcoming series, and like the Aniston/Witherspoon/Carell offering, See also boasts some star-power in the form of Aquaman’s Momoa. The series looks like it will appeal to fans of dystopian YA stories like The Hunger Games (and indeed, Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence is behind the camera of See as well). The official synopsis for See reads:
“See” takes place in the distant future, after a deadly virus decimated humankind. Those who survived, emerged blind. Jason Momoa stars as Baba Voss — the father of twins born centuries later with the mythic ability to see — who must protect his tribe against a powerful yet desperate queen who wants the twins destroyed.
At least going by the trailer, Apple has put some serious money behind See, which looks to have A-level movie quality production values alongside a legitimate star in Momoa. Written by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight, the series also stars Alfre Woodard, Yadira Guevara-Prip, Sylvia Hoeks, Nesta Cooper, Archie Madekwe, Christian Camargo, Hera Hilmar (of Mortal Engines fame) and Marilee Talkington. Dytsopian YA fiction is of course not as big as it was a few years ago when Hunger Games hit movie screens, but See looks like it offers a compelling story and will make a strong addition to the line-up at Apple TV+ as the service ramps up its content in hopes of wresting its piece of the streaming pie away from Netflix, Hulu and company.
