Legendary drag king Murray Hill will host first-ever drag king reality competition show

Condragulations are in order for New York comedy and nightlife legend Murray Hill.

On Monday, LGBTQ+ streaming platform Revry announced that the Somebody Somewhere star will host its upcoming series King of Drag.

Variety reported that the first season will premiere this spring with six episodes. Similar to the multiple Emmy-winning RuPaul’s Drag Race, the show will reportedly feature eight of America’s top drag kings competing for the “King of Drag” title.

But in a press release, the show’s producers promised to set the show apart from its drag queen-focused predecessor. According to the release, King of Drag “will showcase drag kings’ unique talents including comedy, unconventional performances, and timely commentary on masculinity, which has been part of the drag king subculture for decades.”

“In each episode, we will learn more about the individual king’s backstory, what motivates them, and their goals for kinging,” the release continues.

In a statement, Revry co-founder and chief content officer Christopher J. Rodriguez said the show “is one of the most ambitious original programs we’ve ever developed.”

“We’re going to give the drag competition format a run for its money and give audiences something fresh and original,” Rodriguez added.

“I’m so excited to be working with Revry as the host of King of Drag,” Hill said. “I started performing in 1995, so it’s long overdue for the kings to take center stage. This vibrant community deserves to be in the spotlight, and I’ll be their biggest hype man. I can’t wait to work with the kings and introduce them to the biggest audience possible, thanks to Revry. That’s showbiz.”

“We are overjoyed to have Murray Hill host the series and introduce a new world of drag to global audiences,” Rodriguez said. “His comedy, wit, and experience will be a perfect match for a series that platforms a passionate group in the LGBTQ+ community who are blazing their own trails and carving new paths within the entertainment industry.”

Casting for the series is currently underway, and performers have until January 5, 2025, to apply to appear on King of Drag via a form on Revry’s website.
