Travis Scott has announced that a new movie called Circus Maximus is coming to theaters this week. It features new music that will be featured on his upcoming album Utopia, which he tweeted is coming on Friday. Find one of the cover variants below.
According to the poster he shared below, Scott directed the movie in collaboration with Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn, Harmony Korine, Valdimar Jóhannsson, and Kahlil Joseph. Starting on July 27, the movie will screen at AMC theaters across the U.S.; additional screenings are “TBA.” Watch the trailer below.
Though the poster reads that Circus Maximus was produced by A24, a representative for the studio has clarified to Pitchfork that it is not involved with the film. Pitchfork has reached out to Scott’s representatives for clarification.
The film’s description on AMC’s ticket portal reads: “Prepare to enter Circus Maximus as Travis Scott takes his audience on a mind-bending visual odyssey across the globe, woven together by the speaker rattling sounds of his highly anticipated upcoming album Utopia. The film is a surreal and psychedelic journey, uniting a collective of visionary filmmakers from around the world in a kaleidoscopic exploration of human experience and the power of soundscapes.”
Scott’s new song “K-Pop” was released last week; it features the Weeknd and Bad Bunny. A livestream event to celebrate “the world of Utopia” with a performance in front of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt is set to take place this week despite cancellation rumors. Utopia will his first album following the “mass casualty incident” at his 2021 Astroworld music festival in Houston where eight died and others were injured.
Scott dropped his last studio LP, Astroworld, in 2018, following 2016’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. In 2020, Scott released Jackboys, a compilation featuring artists on his Cactus Jack record label.
Prior to the two songs released just before Astroworld, Scott’s most recent song as lead artist was 2020’s “Franchise” featuring M.I.A. and Young Thug. The single was remixed by Future. Scott appeared on songs with Kanye West, Future, Pharrell, SZA, Trippie Red, Metro Boomin, Drake, 21 Savage, and more. He debuted a new song at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.
In 2020, Scott also teamed up with Kid Cudi for “The Scotts,” which debuted during a Fortnite concert. He released a song with NAV and Gunna and another with Migos and Young Thug. Another Young Thug collaboration called “Out West” got a music video featuring a cameo from Quincy Jones. He also released “The Plan,” which he recorded for Christopher Nolan’s latest film Tenet.
