You can’t listen to them and hear even a hint of imitation. They are, instead, carving out their own path and have hit upon a style all their own. “Party” doesn’t concern itself with trends in music. Stewart, Ilizaliturri, and their collaborators are intent on voicing their talent in a language all their own rather than piggybacking on whatever flavor of the moment is seizing the popular imagination. It’s this sort of commitment that ensures they will be around for many more years to come.

They give lie to the idea that modern acts lack that special “something” their renowned predecessors possessed. There’s a spark of inspiration lighting up every verse of “Party”, it definitely cuts against your expectations, and it sparkles as well with undoubted sincerity. The way that David Stewart Jr. sings the lyrics makes it easy to believe he’s lived the pain chronicled in the song’s words. It’s worth hearing this song just for the way he wheels into the chorus and plunges deep into listener’s hearts.
It isn’t performed poetry, but he has excellent lyrics to work with. The 1st person perspective obliterates any distance between the singer and his audience and the words are layered with a perfect balance of the specific and general. They are penned with the music in mind rather than as an afterthought and the percussive quality they achieve helps elevate the song rather than distract listeners. These are two elements of the song working in perfect accord.
You can hear the song’s origins if you are attentive enough. The demo for this song was probably Stewart and his acoustic guitar, but Migrant Motel’s producer Peder Etholm Idsoe brought a lot to the table to help fill out their sound. Ilizaliturri’s drumming gives it an assertive counterweight to Stewart’s understated vocals during the verses. There’s an acoustic guitar rising to the surface of the mix as well that beefs up the sound.
A top-notch music video is the cherry on top of a tasty confection. They don’t settle for the normal approach to videos, it isn’t a collection of quick, jarring cuts – but a new take on an extended tracking shot. It depicts a night at home with rather mundane things going on. I believe fans will relate because it’s honest in showing what a lot of folks do when they are chilling out during an evening at home.

If they keep working at this level, Migrant Motel can accomplish whatever they like, as the talent is there. Moreover, Migrant Motel shows an ongoing willingness to work hard and keep grinding it out live, as evidenced by recent sold out shows at Bardot, The Mint, and Hotel Café can attest to. This is how enduring careers in music are built – one excellent track at a time. “Party” is the latest building block towards lasting greatness.
