Album Review: Angie Wells “Truth Be Told”

Music

“Jazz is smooth and cool. Jazz is rage. Jazz flows like water. Jazz never seems to begin or end. Jazz isn’t methodical, but jazz isn’t messy either. Jazz is a conversation, a give-and-take. Jazz is the connection and communication between musicians. Jazz is abandon”….Nat Wolff

The newest album skillfully launched and entitled “Truth Be Told” by singer/songwriter Angie Wells is all of the above quote.

“Jazz stands for freedom. It’s supposed to be the voice of freedom: get out there and improvise, and take chances and don’t be a perfectionist – leave that to the classical musicians.”….Dave Brubeck

Angie Wells is all of that and more. She’s an “I dare you” type of singer with a velvet voice and a salacious vibe. “The Truth Be Told” expresses feelings, passions, hopes, dreams, sadness, and joy. It’s a mixed bag of innocence, vulnerability, strength, passion, and happiness. She’s not afraid to visit topics like police brutality and the plight of the homeless. She’s not afraid to articulate journeys into the unknown to create her own world of song.

The truth be told, Angie Wells can most definitely sing anything. However, she has chosen to sing jazz. Brought up amongst the very music she sings and loves Angie was inspired….”There’s Always Time For Lovin’”, is upbeat, spirited, bouncy and fun. “The Truth Be Told” is daring, “Nick Of Time” tells a story….the entire album sets a mood, a time for wine, and a time for romance by the fireside.

The two best parts of this record for me are the fact that each song although jazz based explores hints of different genres. Secondly, I could listen to the voice of Angie Wells forever……
