Dancing With The Stars Judge Derek Hough Doesn’t Want A “First Dance” At Wedding To Hayley Erbert

Reality TV

Derek Hough has been a staple on the dance scene for many years now. Fans all over the world got to know Derek through his tenure on Dancing with the Stars, along with little sister Julianne Hough.

Both Derek and Julianne are returning to the DWTS stage in tandem next season. Derek is judging and Julianne was just brought on as co-host along with Alfonso Ribeiro. Now that Tyra Banks is out and all appears right with the world, Derek can look forward to his upcoming nuptials with Hayley Erbert.

Tradition is usually the name of the game when it comes to wedding ceremonies. You might think the dancer would be looking forward to the first dance with his new bride – but Derek wants to take a pass on the custom in favor of enjoying his moment.

According to People, Derek might dance for a living, but he doesn’t feel like performing on the day he gets married. He told Entertainment Tonight, “I kind of wish we didn’t need to do a first dance. Because I just want to, like, be in the moment.” Nothing wrong with this, but he probably needs to defer to his future wife before making any executive decisions.

Hayley doesn’t need to worry, ultimately Derek will struggle through the first dance. “We will have a first dance. But I want to try to make it feel not like a performance. I want it to be a [real] first dance, you know what I mean?” I’m sure no one expects pyrotechnics or Tom Bergeron to pop up from under the table, so Derek should be okay.

He and Hayley were engaged in June 2022 after seven years of dating. My Magic 8 Ball is saying “ask again later” when I inquired on whether or not Derek received an ultimatum for wedded bliss from his patient fiancée.

After an extended relationship, Derek wants to do something extra spiffy on the dance floor. “We need to do something special, spectacular, you know subtle. Maybe come in from the roof, I don’t know.”

That said, Derek and Hayley want to relax and not stress about the big day itself. “At first, you know we dance a lot, I think it might be time for other people to perform for us, right? I’m like, ‘Hey, you dance for us. No, you dance.’ We’re gonna sit back,” he added.

Derek also shared he’s been busy calling performers to have them put on a show at their wedding. He knows quite a few famous names, so it could be a good time. “I’m not going to name names right now, but I’ve already asked a few people to perform at the wedding and they’ve already committed. So it’s going to be a full-on festival — I’m very excited about it.” At this time I have yet to receive my invite from Derek to perform my classic Bob Fosse number. I will update you as soon as I check today’s mail.

While Derek and Hayley have been together for a minute now, the couple said being on lockdown is what sealed the deal. They worked on establishing a firm foundation and wound up becoming best friends. This is probably the way it’s supposed to happen. Congrats to the dancing duo!
