M3GAN Review

First up, Universal and Blumhouse’s theatrical horror hit M3GAN is now available at home, the fan favorite film surprise-released for PVOD rental and/or purchase this morning.

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.

When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGrawThe Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.

Produced by Jason Blum and James WanM3GAN is directed by award-winning filmmaker Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant, The Nun 2) based on a story by Akela Cooper and James Wan.

Fans of Battle Royale are going to lose their heads over Signal 100, the latest splatterfest from Japan that’s now available on the Bloody Disgusting-powered SCREAMBOX as of today.

Directed by Lisa Takeba (The Pinkie), Signal 100 harkens back to the days of horror boundary-pushing features like Battle Royale and Black Rat. In the SCREAMBOX Exclusive…

“A group of high school students are forced into an assignment where they are hypnotized and will commit suicide on an unknown command in Signal 100.”

The film, which is based on the manga series of the same name, features a stellar young cast including Shôdai Fukuyama (Scams), Yûta Koseki (Familiar Wife) and the award-winning actress Kanna Hashimoto (Sailor Suit, Machine Gun: Graduation).

After premiering last year at Fantastic Fest, Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, the third film in James Nguyen‘s so-bad-it’s-good franchise, also arrived on VOD platforms today, January 24th.

In the latest from Severin Films, the birds are back, and global warming has them roiled…

“When global warming triggers climate chaos along the Northern California coast, two scientific researchers will discover tender romance, awkward dancing, overly earnest moralizing, appalling CGI, automatic weapons, and a plague of attacks by sea eagles that could lead to the extinction of life on earth. Or as one character wisely proclaims in this conclusion of Nguyen’s immortal cinematic vision, ‘We have to accept our fate. It is death.’”

Paramount+ is bringing the Teen Wolf franchise back to life with both Teen Wolf: The Movie and spinoff series “Wolf Pack,” and they’re both premiering on January 26, 2023.

Teen Wolf: The Movie is a feature film based on the television series.

In Teen Wolf: The Movie, written and produced by Jeff Davisa full moon rises in Beacon Hills and with it a terrifying evil has emerged. The wolves are howling once again, calling for the return of banshees, werecoyotes, hellhounds, kitsunes and every other shapeshifter in the night.

But only a werewolf like Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), no longer a teenager yet still an alpha, can both gather new allies and reunite trusted friends to fight back against what could be the most powerful and deadliest enemy they’ve ever faced.

The film also stars Tyler Hoechlin, Orny Adams, Linden Ashby, JR Bourne, Seth Gilliam, Ryan Kelley, Melissa Ponzio, Ian Bohen and Nobi Nakanishi.

Liz Fania Werner and Carlos Montaner‘s dark thriller Waking Karma is being released in North America from XYZ Films this week, coming to VOD outlets on Thursday, January 26th.

A tale of buried family secrets and unbridled religious fanaticism, the psychological thriller stars award-winning actor Michael Madsen (The Hateful Eight, Kill Bill, Species).

“Filmmakers Carlos Montaner and Liz Fania Werner’s thrilling new feature expertly combines paranoia and suspense into a psychologically destructive journey through the unknown. Coupled with dynamite performances from Michael Madsen and Hannah Christine Shetler, Waking Karma is primed to explode when it arrives on January 26th.”In the film, “Karma and her mother have spent their lives evading Paul, her cult leader father (Michael Madsen). With Paul closing in as Karma reaches adulthood, she and her mother flee to a friend’s remote compound.

“Paul tracks them there and traps them within its walls, putting Karma through a series of escalating tests designed to break her spirit and awaken an unholy inheritance that lives within her.”

Directed by Liz Fania Werner and Carlos Montaner with a script by Werner, the film stars Hannah Christine Shelter, Kimberly Alexander, and Bradley Fisher.

Brandon Cronenberg‘s (Antiviral, Possessor) new movie Infinity Pool is headed our way this week, coming exclusively to theaters courtesy of NEON on Friday, January 27th.

Mia Goth (Pearl) stars alongside Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman).

In the film, “While staying at an isolated island resort, James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: “Either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.”

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “While more accessible and linear than the filmmaker’s previous effort, it’s no less compelling, audacious, and extremely violent.”

Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist) is back with psychological horror movie Blood, and Vertical Entertainment will be releasing the film in theaters on January 27, 2023.

Michelle Monaghan (“True Detective”) stars alongside Skeet Ulrich (Scream), Finlay Wojtak-Hissong, Rodrigo Beilfuss, Erik Athavale, June B. Wilde, and Skylar Morgan Jones.

“The film follows Jess (Michelle Monaghan), a nurse and mother recently separated from her husband (Skeet Ulrich), who moves with her daughter Tyler (Skylar Morgan Jones) and young son Owen (Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) back into her old farmhouse. Shortly after settling in, Owen’s dog escapes into the woods and returns days later, blood-soaked and rabid. When he attacks and bites Owen, the resulting infection from the bite grows more alarming by the day as Owen’s behavior becomes frightening and deadly.

“As he spirals deeper into the depths of the illness, Jess discovers a disturbing cure, which makes her question how far she is willing to go to keep her child alive.”

“Brad Anderson has delivered the quintessential horror film with a cast, led by Monaghan and Ulrich, that delivers on every level,” said Vertical Entertainment Partner Peter Jarowey. “We are excited to be back in business with Hercules Film Fund and Rhea Films and feel this holiday counter-programming will thrill audiences long after we ring in the new year.”

From Deon Taylor, the director of 2019’s The Intruder, the final new horror movie of the week is Fear, and it’s coming to theaters nationwide on Friday, January 27, 2023.

A group of friends gather for a much-needed weekend getaway at a remote and historic hotel.  Celebration turns into terror as one by one, each guest faces their own worst fear.”

Joseph Sikora, Andrew Bachelor, Annie Ilonzeh, Ruby Modine, Iddo Goldberg, Terrence Jenkins, and Jessica Allain star in the psychological movie alongside Tip “T.I.” Harris.
