Mozzy, the prolific Sacramento rapper, has begun a 12-month sentence at the U.S. penitentiary in Atwater, California. The musician had been indicted by a federal grand jury in California on a weapons possession charge in 2021. The rapper eventually agreed to plead guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. In addition to the yearlong sentence, Mozzy paid a $55,000 fine, according to court documents.

When reached by Pitchfork, a representative for the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate named Timothy Cornell Patterson (Mozzy’s legal name) began a 12-month sentence on July 28. In addition, Stanley I. Greenberg, one of Mozzy’s attorneys wrote in an email to Pitchfork, “Mozzy has been designated to serve his sentence at the minimum-security camp at Atwater, rather than the adjacent high-security prison. Accordingly he is not viewed as a danger, and will have limited opportunities for sentence reduction.”

Mozzy has released projects at a regular rate since the early 2010s. His solo catalog includes standout releases like Bladadah, Yellow Tape Activities, Fake Famous, 1 Up Top Ahk, and Beyond Bulletproof. He has also shared collaborative full-lengths with YG (Kommunity Service), Gunplay (Dreadlocks & Headshots and Chop Stixx & Banana Clips), Berner (Slimey Individualz), Lil Blood (Bloody Waters), and others.

In 2018, Mozzy was famously shouted out by Kendrick Lamar during an acceptance speech at the Grammys. Not long after, he was featured on the Lamar-curated Black Panther: The Album, joining Sjava and Reason on “Seasons.”

Just last week, Mozzy released his new album Survivor’s Guilt. It marked his first record issued in partnership with Yo Gotti’s Interscope imprint CMG.
