The Weeknd has shared the first teaser trailer for The Idol, his upcoming series for HBO Max. Starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye himself, The Idol follows a female pop singer as she becomes romantically involved with a Los Angeles club owner and cult leader. Teasing drug-fueled hookup scenes, intense dance rehearsals, and lots of power moves, the trailer claims the show is “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.” Watch it below.
The Idol was co-created by the Weeknd, Euphoria director Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim, the Weeknd’s producing partner. In addition to Depp and Tesfaye, the cast also includes Troye Sivan, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, Anne Heche, Melanie Liburd, Steve Zissis, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Hari Nef, and Nico Hiraga. An official release date has not been announced, but the teaser trailer says it’s “coming soon.”
The Weeknd is currently on the road for his 2022 North American tour in support of Dawn FM. Last week, his tour kickoff in Toronto was unexpectedly postponed as a result of a nationwide outage of Canada’s main telecommunications company. Earlier this year, the Weeknd headlined the final night of Coachella where he debuted a number of Dawn FM tracks and performed his verse from his Kanye West collaboration “Hurricane.”
