Well, that was short-lived. Variety had reported on the rumor just yesterday that David Lynch was going to be bringing a secret new movie to Cannes this year, the scoop coming from “two well-informed sources.” The site even reported that Laura Dern would be appearing in the mysterious movie, but alas, Lynch himself has shot down the rumor completely.
Lynch tells Entertainment Weekly today, “I have no new film coming out. That’s a total rumor. So there you are. It is not happening. I don’t have a project. I have nothing at Cannes.”
“It’s unfortunate,” Lynch continues. “It got built up that people thought, ‘Oh, that’d be nice.’ But there is something new, but it’s not mine. I don’t know whose it is. They say there’s something new at Cannes, and they don’t say whose it is, and some people thought it was my film, but it’s not. So we’ll wait and see, and see whose it is.”
Variety mentioned in yesterday’s report, “The feature could either be a standalone movie that [Lynch] shot under the radar or an extended pilot of his upcoming series “Wisteria” which is rumored to star Lynch regulars including Laura Dern and Naomi Watts.”
Alas, it seems Lynch has “nothing at Cannes.” So we’ll have to wait to learn more about “Wisteria,” which itself is a mysterious project that has been shrouded in secrecy. Stay tuned…
This year’s 75th Cannes Film Festival runs from May 17 to May 28.
