With season 16 and The Witch Queen expansion for Destiny 2, many updates to the game’s loot pool were made. Old content has been removed to make room for new content through Bungie’s Destiny Content Vault (DCV) or through Destiny 2‘s controversial sunsetting system. Last year, after the Beyond Light expansion dropped, Bungie removed two special exotic missions. One was for the Exotic sniper rifle Whisper of The Worm, and the other for the exotic pulse rifle Outbreak Perfected. These missions also gave the exotic catalysts for each weapon, but they were among the most difficult to get in the game, so not many players could obtain them before they got sunsetted. Luckily, there are now new ways to obtain the weapons and their catalysts after almost two years.
The Whisper mission that the Whisper of The Worm could be obtained from before being sunsetted was easily one of the most challenging activities in Destiny 2, right next to Outbreak Perfected’s Zero Hour mission. Completing The Whisper mission before it was sunsetted awarded each player in the fireteam the Whisper of The Worm sniper rifle, but players had to run the mission back while collecting secret chests and completing an oracle puzzle at least once a week for three weeks to obtain the weapons catalyst. The Whispers’ catalyst gives the weapon the sniper the Boxed Breathing perk, which increases the weapon’s precision damage significantly after aiming down sights for a few seconds with the weapon.
To get the catalyst, players must have the weapon unlocked first. Players who don’t have the Whisper of The Worm yet can obtain it from the Exotic Kiosk in the Tower. The catalyst itself can be unlocked by completing any of the three core activities. This includes Strikes, Crucible, and Gambit activities. Many players have reported high drop rates for catalyst after Nightfall completions in the Strikes Playlist. The Whisper catalyst is a random loot drop from these sources, so players will have to be lucky to get it to drop. Once players get the catalyst, they’ll have to complete its’ objective to activate it.
How to Get The Whisper of The Worm Catalyst in Destiny 2
After players obtain the Whisper of The Worm‘ catalyst from playlist activities, they’ll have to get 500 kills with the weapon in order to activate it. This catalyst can be very tedious to complete considering the Whisper of The Worm is a heavy sniper rifle that takes heavy ammo. So, it’s best to stock up on raid banners and head to the Shuro Chi checkpoint of Destiny 2‘s Last Wish Raid in the Dreaming City to farm the catalyst objective. Here, players will be able to replenish their heavy ammo and complete the objective by killing the dozens of Shadow Thrall that spawn with Shuro Chi.
While the objective to unlock the catalyst is highly tedious, it is still very worth it to unlock. The Whisper of The Worm can provide insane damage with its White Nail perk on an endgame boss that takes precision damage, both of Vow of the Disciples raid bosses. Luckily, players are more than likely to get the Whipsers’ catalyst to drop without going out of their way to farm it, as long as they play enough playlist activities.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia platforms.
