Gillian Anderson Would Only Even Consider “X-Files” Return With Entirely New Approach

Horror

Gillian Anderson, who just signed a first-look deal with Netflix this week, has made no secret of the fact that she’s done playing Dana Scully, returning for the eleventh and final season of “The X-Files” back in 2018 but making it clear it would be the last time we see her on screen as the iconic character we first met, alongside David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder, in the 90s.

Last we heard, the “X-Files” franchise is next going to take the form of a spinoff project titled “The X-Files: Albuquerque,” which has been described as an animated comedy series.

Now a few years removed from the eleventh season of “The X-Files,” how is Gillian Anderson feeling about things? Well, mostly the same, the actress tells Variety this week.

“It just feels like such an old idea. I’ve done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note,” Anderson explains. “In order to even begin to have that conversation [about another season] there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive.”

She adds, “So yeah, it’s very much in the past.”

Anderson has made it clear that she wasn’t happy with the ending of Season 11, which revealed that Scully is pregnant with Mulder’s child – and that William was not their son. It sounds like in all likelihood we won’t be getting a continuation of that storyline, so don’t hold your breath. As for what Anderson is up to over at Netflix, we’ll be sure to keep you posted!
