Christopher Nolan’s newest film Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy adds James D’Arcy (Agent Carter, Dunkirk) and Michael Angarano (Sky High, This Is Us) to the cast. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan will explore the events surrounding the Manhattan Project and the inception of the atomic bomb. D’Arcy and Angarano join a star-studded ensemble cast, sharing the screen with Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), and Matt Damon (Interstellar).
Directing his own screenplay adaptation, Nolan will explore the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Murphy, and the discoveries he made as the “father of the atomic bomb.” Production is currently taking place and while most details are being kept quiet, audiences are anticipating a unique story from Nolan that does not follow traditional biopic structures. Casting updates prove the film has built an impressive ensemble to adapt the complex, true events. According to Murphy, Nolan tells the story in an “unusual wayy,” creating what is potentially his best film to date.
Deadline announced the recent additions of D’Arcy and Angarano to the Oppenheimer cast, though details about their characters are undisclosed. For D’Arcy, this will be a reunion with Nolan, after working with him on Dunkirk in 2017. This will be Angarano’s first role with the acclaimed director, joining the cast after recent success earning his first Emmy nomination for This Is Us.
With D’Arcy and Angarano joining Oppenheimer at such a late stage in development, it’s possible they won’t have as much screen time as others in the star-studded ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see who they both ultimately end up playing, and how significant a role they have. Even if the parts are small, it’s easy to see why the two would want to sign on for the project. Nolan is one of the most acclaimed directors of the 21st century, amassing an impressive filmography over the years. His movies are frequently must-see events, so working with him is appealing for most actors.
Curating a noteworthy cast for this unique new film, Nolan’s Oppenheimer is sure to be an exciting look at one of the most significant advancements made during World War II. Exploring the physicist’s story will not be easy, so working with Murphy again was a strong choice on behalf of Nolan. Collaborating on projects like Inception and The Dark Knight, the actor-director duo are familiar with one another and Nolan clearly has confidence in Murphy’s ability to take on the challenges of this story. D’Arcy and Angarano are two of the newest additions who will show up as support for Murphy while bringing history to life. Audiences are waiting with bated breath to see how the director explores the controversial moment in time, and are eager to witness so many A-listers share the screen.
