Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for the Netflix series All of Us Are Dead.
Despite the terrifying zombies and harsh conditions the characters endure in Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead, some of them still do incredibly brave things to help others. While these often leave them vulnerable or even result in their deaths, they do help others to make it another day in the horrific streets of Hyosan.
The best things the characters do in the series are almost always selfless acts meant to ensure others’ wellbeing. With these kindhearted characters putting themselves in danger for their friends, it’s not surprising that their courageous actions often result in heartwarming or tear-jerking scenes that stay with fans long after they’re done watching the show.
Oh Joon-yeong: Kept His Promise And Sacrificed Himself
Joon-yeong may not initially be one of the bravest characters in All of Us Are Dead, but he shows that he’s capable of incredible fearlessness and selflessness in the face of death. After he’s bitten in the gym as the group struggles to fend off the zombies, any terror he had about the situation seemingly evaporates.
He has a moment of clarity when he looks around and realizes he promised to take responsibility if his design for the contraption failed. It’s almost too painful to watch as his friends try to stop him from climbing over to distract the zombies and then pull them away from the others as they make their escape.
Nam So-ju: Saved His Daughter
The most saddening part of So-ju’s death is that fans know how hard he worked to be reunited with his daughter. He escapes a well-guarded camp, survives countless bullets, swims through a river, and walks through the dangerous streets of Hyosan to find and save On-jo.
Their heartwarming reunion is shockingly cut short when So-ju decides to distract a group of zombies to keep his daughter and her friends safe. The way his storyline is cut so abruptly highlights how anyone can die at any time when zombies are involved. His death also underscores how as On-jo’s father, he’s willing to do anything to protect her.
Song Jae-ik: Delivered The Message About The Laptop
Jae-ik’s unwavering determination to deliver the message about the laptop and help authorities stop the zombie outbreak is impressive, to say the least. When contrasted with his companion’s more cowardly behavior, he looks even more courageous as he fights through and escapes hordes of zombies.
Of course, delivering the message may have been Jae-ik’s best act in the series so far, but he has done a few other selfless things along the way. He saves a young girl and an infant, as well as a dim-witted influencer, even though he knows that rescuing them endangers his mission.
Nam On-jo: Created A Makeshift Toilet
When fans think about On-jo’s actions throughout the first season, they may realize that despite being one of the smartest characters in All of Us Are Dead, she doesn’t do anything particularly brave or remarkable.
She’s often mourning others’ deaths and can sometimes encourage people like Su-hyeok and Nam-ra, but none of these things have significantly impacted the group’s survival. Perhaps the most notable move from the student is her initiative to create a makeshift bathroom in the broadcasting room. It’s a small act of kindness compared to others viewers see on the show, but still an altruistic thing nonetheless.
Jang Ha-ri: Rescued Her Brother
Despite Mi-jin’s comments about her brother potentially being undead, Ha-ri holds out hope and doesn’t stop searching for a long time. Her perfect timing wouldn’t have been possible if she had given up and gone to the forest much earlier than Woo-jin’s group.
Ha-ri’s badass entrance is an unforgettable scene, as she skillfully saves two characters who would have otherwise been eaten by zombies. Her brother immediately knows it’s her when he spots the arrow that saves his life. It’s touching that he eventually gives his own to save hers, as well.
Lee Su-hyeok: Defended Nam-ra
When the rest of the group see that Nam-ra has a bite mark on her wrist, they immediately want to throw her out. Su-hyeok, who is in love with her at this point, bravely defends her and insists that Gwi-nam was most definitely alive when he bit her.
It’s obvious that Su-hyeok would have used his fighting abilities to protect Nam-ra from the other students if he ever had to. His insistence on keeping her in the group helps Nam-ra forge deeper bonds with her newfound friends, which proves invaluable when she saves them from Gwi-nam later in the show.
Lee Cheong-san: Sacrificed Himself So His Friends Could Escape
It’s easy to see why Cheong-san is a fan favorite. His love for On-jo motivates him to do risky things just to protect and encourage her, like when he goes last as the rest of the group climbs down to a lower floor, just to make sure On-jo doesn’t get left behind.
His boldest move happens when the students are stuck on the side of an unfinished building, unable to escape the inevitable bombs. After a heartbreaking last conversation with On-jo, he fearlessly runs into the building and lures Gwi-nam and a ton of mindless zombies away from his friends. It’s one of those deaths viewers refuse to believe because they want to see the endearing character alive and well in the next season.
Park Mi-jin: Didn’t Leave Joon-Soong Behind
The funny dynamic between Mi-jin and Joon-soong is an underrated one in the series. It’s amusing to watch the tough Mi-jin poke fun at the cowardly Joon-soong at every turn, especially since fans know that she actually cares for her friend.
Joon-soong brings out Mi-jin’s brave and compassionate side, as although she teases him, she never leaves him behind. Despite suffering an injury that would slow the group down, Mi-jin insists on carrying him and risking her own life to bring him along – he likely would have died much earlier without her. It’s not surprising that Joon-soong ends up saving Mi-jin, and he does so willingly and fearlessly.
Yang Dae-su: Stayed Behind In The Music Room
Dae-su may be a funny character, but when it comes down to it, he’ll do what it takes to protect his friends. Fans see a glimpse of the talented singer’s more heroic side when they stack the music room with furniture before luring a horde of zombies. The students start escaping one by one after they realize they bit off more than they could chew.
Dae-su is the last person who leaves the room, and if it weren’t for Cheong-san’s intervention, he likely would have held the barrier of furniture back for as long as humanly possible. Fans probably found themselves sighing with relief once they realized that wouldn’t be Dae-su’s demise in the series, at least not yet.
Choi Nam-ra: Left The Group
Nam-ra is a bright student, which is why she immediately understands that she may be a danger to the rest of the group. Without Su-hyeok around to convince her, she likely would’ve just left as soon as she turned into a halfbie.
The risk that she poses is always on her mind, which turns out to be a good thing for her friends. She stops herself from killing On-jo before making the difficult decision to leave. Despite finding genuine friendship (and love) for the first time, she chooses to distance herself from the other students for their own safety. Fans will hopefully see more of her and her campfires in future episodes.
