Tango Gameworks: ‘Ghostwire: Tokyo’ Originally Started Out as ‘The Evil Within 3′

Horror

For you fans of 2017’s The Evil Within 2, you’re probably wondering if there will be a third entry anytime soon. Well, it turns out that Tango Gameworks’ upcoming Bethesda title Ghostwire: Tokyo started out as The Evil Within 3.

In a new hands-off demonstration with the upcoming action-adventure horror title, Gamespot reveals that the Tango Gameworks team was in the process of developing The Evil Within 3. However, changes during development caused them to re-evaluate things, ultimately deciding to change directions on the project and creating a new IP.

However, there’s still enough of The Evil Within left in Ghostwire: Tokyo for fans to be excitied. For example, the first two games in The Evil Within series featured “morphing, shifting rooms”, which in turn was adopted by Ghostwire: Tokyo. The only difference is that Ghostwire puts the cause on Hannya and his cult of followers, instead of someone’s mind trying to shield itself from further trauma in The Evil Within.

As for if Tango Gameworks will return to The Evil Within 3, that remains to be seen. Producer Shinji Mikami stated last year that The Evil Within 2 director John Johanas had begun work on Tango Gameworks’ next project to follow Ghostwire: Tokyo. However, that was after Microsoft purchased ZeniMax (and Bethesda in the process), which calls into question if The Evil Within 3 is being developed, and if it’ll be an Xbox exclusive.

Time will tell, as they say.

Meanwhile, Ghostwire: Tokyo will arrive on PlayStation 5 and PC on March 25.
