Battlefield 2042 Is The Franchise’s Worst Release Ever

Movies

Thanks to a myriad of bugs and issues, as well as unpopular design decisions like swapping out classes for Specialists, Battlefield 2042 has had the worst release in the franchise’s history. Despite being the second most-played game on Steam at launch, Battlefield 2042’s overwhelmingly negative reviews are a testament to many Battlefield fans’ disappointment in the latest installment of the franchise. Steam continues to issue refunds for Battlefield 2042 due to the abundant issues and bugs that persist months after the game’s release. Within days of launch, Battlefield 2042 became one of the worst-reviewed games of all time on Steam and currently has the 14th lowest score on the platform.

The Battlefield franchise has been a mainstay in the first-person shooter genre for 20 years, ever since its debut in 2002 with Battlefield 1942. Since then, the franchise has spawned a dozen games, most of which have been well received. Fans eagerly awaited the release of the latest game in the Battlefield franchise, made evident by the fact Battlefield 2042’s beta was EA’s most successful early access event ever. However, Battlefield 2042 was poorly received by fans and critics across the board at launch. Many players review-bombed Battlefield 2042 on Steam, where it currently has a score of 2.96/10.

Redemption for Battlefield 2042 seems unlikely now, regardless of how many bug fixes, patches, and quality of life updates developer DICE releases in the coming months. 2042‘s glitches are bad enough, but the game’s issues run deeper than just that, with many players having taken issue with the overall direction of the title, including its Specialist classes and UI. Although it had high player numbers at launch, Battlefield 2042 player numbers dropped by 70% in just two weeks afterward. Many Battlefield 2042 players dropped the game and went back to older Battlefield games instead, like 2018’s Battlefield V which has retained a loyal player base despite suffering its own launch issues when it released in 2018. Hopefully, the next installment in the Battlefield series will learn lessons from Battlefield 2042’s mistakes, taking on board the criticism from the game’s community to ensure that the same mistakes don’t happen again.

Battlefield 2042 Is The Lowest Rated Battlefield Game In History

Battlefield 2042’s issues and bugs were plentiful and wide-ranging including everything from visual glitches, to players getting stuck on the map’s geometry, and many were unable to even play the game due to persistent connection and server issues. In total, dozens of issues and bugs were found in Battlefield 2042 at launch, many of which were also present in the game’s beta. One big issue identified in both the beta and Battlefield 2042 at launch was flickering, whereby the map’s lighting flickers erratically. Many Battlefield players have also taken issue with the design direction of 2042 overall, bemoaning the replacement of classes with the hero-shooter-like Specialists, which some believe contradict the series’ tone.

Battlefield fans were excited to see what was next for the franchise but evidently a great number were left sorely disappointed by Battlefield 2042. Its launch may be the second-best in the Battlefield franchise’s history, but unfortunately, fans were left frustrated and disappointed by Battlefield 2042’s long list of missing features and a huge number of bugs unresolved from the game’s beta. This has ensured that Battlefield 2042‘s launch period will go down as the franchise’s worst, even if DICE manages to turn things around going into 2022.
