Cyclops May Expose The X-Men’s Greatest Secret | Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers ahead for X-Men #6

While Scott Summers’ Cyclops has been overruled by the X-Men’s Quiet Council about adding Captain Krakoa to his team of heroes, he may expose mutantkind’s greatest secret in response. While recent issues of Marvel Comics’ X-Men have seen the newest team operating in New York once more, enemies have been closing in. Furthermore, Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich was planning to expose the X-Men’s ability to resurrect themselves, and it looked like Cyclops was thinking about helping him, seemingly tired of all the secrecy and lies. However, that’s going to be a lot more challenging after this new issue.

Having dedicated his life and company in the pursuit of colonizing Mars for humanity, Kelvin Heng’s Feilong was naturally furious when mutants beat him to the punch, terraforming the red planet and renaming it Arrako. In response, Feilong has now colonized Mars’ moon, Phobos, for humanity while working with the anti-mutant organization Orchis, a major threat to mutantkind. However, the X-Men had bigger problems such as the mysterious foe Dr. Stasis leaking information to Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich who now knows about Krakoa’s ability to resurrect its mutant population. While Urich let Scott know he was planning to write the story as a courtesy, he confirmed that he’d be publishing the story regardless of Summers’ or Krakoa’s wishes.

However, X-Men #6 from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Pepe Larraz has revealed that a whole lot has changed since Urich and Summers’ last meeting in the previous issue. After a very public death, Cyclops is being forced to act like he’s still dead to preserve the X-Men’s secret that they’ve found a way to cheat death. Scott is also revealed to be the new Captain Krakoa, having assumed the identity in order to keep leading the X-Men, a decision mandated by the Quiet Council. Due to Scott’s distaste for the situation and feeling like a false hero, he decides to call Urich about his story only to discover that the Council got to the Daily Bugle reporter first.

Sadly, Urich’s mind was wiped and he has no recollection of his big story or his past meetings with Cyclops. As a result, if Scott truly wants the truth to be exposed about Krakoa and its resurrection protocols, he’s going to have to do it himself. While this will of course create some major division, it’s likely he’ll eventually do it. The X-Men have already had some tensions with the ruling Quiet Council, and their new mandate forcing Scott to pretend as though he permanently died to protect their secrets is probably something Cyclops won’t tolerate for much longer.

It certainly feels as though X-Men fans should prepare for a major status quo shift in the issues to come. If Cyclops doesn’t expose the X-Men’s greatest secret to the public, someone else likely will. The ability to conquer death for an entire species is huge (especially when it’s being kept from humanity). While the consequences will no doubt be dire, Cyclops may decide that the truth is more valuable than the harm it will no doubt cause, perhaps believing that keeping the X-Men’s biggest secret will only make things worse before an inevitable exposure in the Marvel Universe.
