As promotion for Peacemaker ramps up ahead of its January 13 premiere on HBO Max, a billboard in Times Square is displaying fan tweets about the DC show. While James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad may not have been the box office extravaganza Warner Bros./DC Films expected, the film was more than well-received by those who watched it. This is thanks in large part to its ensemble of oddball DCEU characters, including Harley Quinn, Polka-Dot Man, King Shark, and, of course, John Cena’s “douchey” Captain America, Christopher Smith/Peacemaker.
The Suicide Squad spinoff series, Peacemaker, has been written and heavily directed by Gunn, who recognized the titular character’s unexplored potential from the jump. In the flagship film, it’s established that Peacemaker cherishes peace with all his heart and doesn’t care how many men, women, and children he has to kill to get it. This leads him to kill Rick Flag and attempt to kill Ratcatcher 2 before Bloodsport puts him down. In The Suicide Squad’s credits scene, it’s revealed that Peacemaker survived the events on Corto Maltese and is needed to help “save the f—king world.” In Peacemaker, Cena will be joined by his The Suicide Squad co-stars Steve Agee (as prison warden John Economos) and Jennifer Holland (as Amanda Waller’s aide Emilia Harcourt) alongside newcomers Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s father, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, and Nhut Le as Judo Master.
The official Twitter account for Peacemaker on HBO Max recently shared a video of a billboard for the show in Times Square, which is displaying fan tweets in one of the world’s most coveted advertising spots. The message advises readers to react to the series’ latest trailer, so that they could end up featured as well. Gunn also took to social media to back the billboard, and the original posts can be seen below:

Peacemaker is shaping up to be WB/DC’s biggest series, which could mark the beginning of the DCEU’s MCU-esque success on streaming. From the latest redband trailer showing off the show’s villains to Gunn’s regular teases on social media, it’s already being talked about by a lot of people online. That said, the idea to advertise the chatter itself in an attempt to prompt more discussion is arguably a stroke of marketing genius – fans will tweet about Peacemaker just to see their handle in Times Square. Marketing aside, Peacemaker does look to be another pending hit for Gunn.
Plot details for the show remain mostly under wraps, but the series will touch upon the character’s origins and deconstruct his twisted sense of patriotism. Similar to Marvel Studios’ recent buddy-cop pairing in Hawkeye’s Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, Peacemaker will see its main character team up with Adrian Chase/Vigilante, who, despite working in customer service, is even more violently devoted to his ideals. While the series looks to be much more grounded than The Suicide Squad, Gunn has teased future DC projects that will likely stem from Peacemaker. The writer/director is currently working on his final film in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and the success of Peacemaker could determine his future in the DCEU.
