The mid-aughts were an amazing time for reality TV, and Rock of Love was one of the most glorious and dramatic reality TV shows that VH1 had to offer. Longtime reality TV viewers may think they know everything about Rock of Love. However, there’s a lot that went on behind the scenes that might surprise fans.
Rock of Love premiered in 2007 and ran for three seasons. Each season was led by Bret Michaels and featured a group of women hoping to win the heart of the Poison frontman. Throughout the series, there were scores of catfights and drunken mishaps, and many viewers thought of the show as the anti-The Bachelor. Bret never exactly found love on the show, but he did get a fame boost and scored a spot in the hall of fame of reality television. Now, it is time to break down some secrets about the show that viewers weren’t told about.
Bret Wasn’t Single While Filming The Show
On her podcast, Rock of Love season 1 contestant Lacey claimed that Bret confessed to her that he was in an “on-again, off-again relationship” with the mother of his child. A former production member on Reddit claimed that Bret wasn’t actually interested in any of the women from all three seasons. The one exception was Kristy Joe from season 2 - the only woman he contacted after filming wrapped.
The Final Decision Was Made By Production
According to former production members, the early eliminations on Rock of Love were made mostly by Bret. However, as the final choices were made, production was much more involved. In the season 2 finale, producers allegedly had Bret pick Ambre over the more popular contestant, Daisy. This was done so that Daisy could get her own spin-off show on VH1. Then, in season 3 (Rock of Love Bus), the production company allegedly made a deal with Playmate so that Taya could win the season.
Bret Didn’t Live In The Mansion With The Women
Apparently, even though Bret had his own bedroom in the mansion, he never actually stayed there overnight. Whenever filming Rock of Love was done for the day, he would go back to his “crib” to spend the night. If there was any conflict going on between contestants, Bret would be called back to the mansion and be filmed coming out of his room as if he’d been there the whole time.
Many Contestants Were Promised Spin-Offs
Daisy from season 2 got her own show, Daisy of Love, but she wasn’t the only one who was picked for a spin-off. Both Lacey and Heather from season 1 claim they had discussed spin-offs with producers that would have been called I Love Lacey and I Heart Heather, respectively. In turn, a former production member confirmed that spin-offs were often dangled in front of contestants as a way to get them to return for reunions and other shows.
Heather Was A Major Problem For Production
A former producer claims that Heather was one of the most difficult Rock of Love contestants to deal with. When she wasn’t sneaking off with Bret to smoke in secret, she allegedly “acted arrogant” and made unreasonable demands. She was allegedly supposed to return on Rock of Love season 2. But after her explosive confrontation with Daisy and overall diva attitude, producers got annoyed with her and kept her appearance to one episode.
The dating competition show led by Bret Michaels is often slammed for being trashy, but there’s something undeniably compelling about the wild rock-and-roll-themed dating show. For many reality TV fans, Rock of Love is one of the greats and it will never be forgotten for its jaw-dropping drama.
