Ezra Miller hugs his onscreen mother Maribel Verdú in a new behind the scenes image from The Flash. 2022 has arrived, which means it is officially the year when the DCEU will give Miller’s Barry Allen his own solo adventure. The Flash has been in development for years, switching directors and release dates multiple times. Production finally got underway last year under the direction of Andy Muschietti, and the film is currently slated to debut this November. It will be Miller’s second DCEU movie after 2017’s Justice League, and it’s expected to be a big one for the franchise.
Though plot specifics are still being kept largely under wraps, one major element has been confirmed: The Flash will adapt its own version of the famous Flashpoint storyline. In the comics, Barry uses his super speed to run back in time and prevent his mother Nora’s murder. Though he is successful on that front, he also inadvertently causes ripple effects across the multiverse that hold drastic consequences. To highlight this, the Flash movie will feature multiple DC heroes, including Supergirl (Sasha Calle) and two versions of Batman (Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck).
Much of the attention surrounding The Flash has revolved around the returns of Affleck and Keaton, but fans shouldn’t forget the other supporting characters populating the story. Verdú (Pan’s Labyrinth) makes her DCEU debut in The Flash as Nora Allen, and while little has been revealed of her role so far, she’s at the center of the latest behind the scenes picture from the film. Posted to her Instagram story, Verdú hugs Miller close in a sweet picture that just happens to be fans’ first glimpse of what Nora and Barry will look like together. Check it out down below.
The multiverse and its Batmen might be the leading hook for The Flash, but the emotional backbone looks to be the Allen family. Barry’s father Henry (now played by Ron Livingston) will also appear in the film, meaning audiences will get to see the hero with both of his parents. It’s Barry’s desire to exonerate his father (who has been blamed for Nora’s murder) and revive his mother that ultimately fuels the entire Flashpoint storyline, so the emotional bonds between Barry and his parents should feel genuine. It isn’t clear how that will come through on screen, but it’s clear there’s real affection between the actors off-camera.
As The Flash gets closer, more will be revealed about its story and characters. An early teaser, which featured tantalizing images like a second Barry Allen and the return of Keaton’s Batman cowl, was unveiled at DC FanDome back in October. Presumably, it’ll still be a while before a longer trailer emerges, especially since the DCEU has Black Adam to promote first. Nevertheless, there’s still a lot for fans of Barry Allen and his time-traveling antics to look forward to.
