The Matrix Resurrections Pitch Meeting | Screen Rant

Movies

The latest episode of Pitch Meeting takes on The Matrix Resurrections. Directed by Lana Wachowski and starring original leads, Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, The Matrix Resurrections serves as the fourth installment of the franchise, which just debuted in theaters and on HBO Max. Taking place some 60 years after the last film in the original trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions, the film takes a meta approach in re-establishing the series, to varying degrees of success.

The box office for The Matrix Resurrections has been less than stellar with reviews being a mixed bag. Some fans are enjoying the new approach to the franchise, while others are calling it the worst of the series altogether. From meta jokes about the studio and the original trilogy, narrative inconsistencies, the lack of a fully-realized climax, and a number of ideas that don’t quite come together, The Matrix Resurrections has run the gamut of criticism and praise, as audiences continues to mull the cryptic new entry in the series.

Now, The Matrix Resurrections is getting the Pitch Meeting treatment, via Screen Rant, which highlights a number of the more notable flaws, leaps in logic, and downright “meta crap” that surround it. Neo’s new “Force Push” powers that are never explained, the game within a game scenario, and the more interesting history that takes place between the 3rd and 4th films all make for good fodder in dissecting how the film came to be. Host Ryan George brings it all home, going full swarm mode in bullet time, which is barely an inconvenience for this episode. Check it out below:

While The Matrix Resurrections may not be the box office smash WB may have hoped for, there’s plenty on their slate to make up for it in the coming year, including superhero tentpoles like The Batman and The Flash, as well as Baz Lurhman’s Elvis biopic, and a new entry in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, The Secrets of Dumbledore. Reeves just wrapped John Wick: Chapter 4, which is now set to debut in 2023, with John Wick: Chapter 5 set to begin production shortly. There are currently no plans to continue The Matrix saga, but anything could happen as time goes on.

The Matrix Resurrections always felt like it would be a mixed bag for audiences, who have been long distanced from the franchise, which became more and more divisive with the release of each new sequel. While it’s seemingly been impossible to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle that was the first film, there’s still a contingency of fans that love them, including the new one. Sometimes, the more ambiguous works, like The Matrix Resurrections, take a while to grab hold, so it will be interesting to hear what viewers are saying about it after enough years have passed to gain a new perspective on its impact and relation to the franchise as a whole.
