Although Final Fantasy XIV is deemed quite newcomer-friendly for an MMORPG, there are particular systems and mechanics that only a human can teach, which is where Mentors come in. Mentors are veteran players who have invested extensive time into FFXIV and achieved accomplishments that an average player usually wouldn’t have. These FFXIV players voluntarily offer assistance to new adventurers learning the ropes. Such responsibility comes with special privileges, such as having access to an exclusive chat channel known as the Novice Network and being able to queue quickly for Duties with new players. Any new player under level 20 who joins a Mentor’s party in combat will also receive an EXP bonus.
Final Fantasy XIV has several types of Mentors, and players can distinguish between them by their specific icons. Battle Mentors have a yellow sword beside their crown. They are also interchangeable with PvP Mentors, who can be seen with a small bluish flag next to their crown. The crown with the Hammer symbol represents Trade Mentors, those who are well-versed in fishing, crafting, and gathering. However, if an FFXIV player manages to become both a Battle/PvP and Trade Mentor, they will unlock the global golden crown icon, displaying their masterful achievements for all to see.
To become a Mentor in Final Fantasy XIV, players must fulfill a list of requirements that will undoubtedly cost considerable time and effort. Battle and Trade mentorship qualifications are different, as they both focus on a distinct aspect of FFXIV’s gameplay. Once a player has completed the prerequisites, they can register their new Mentor status with the Smith NPCs located in all three starting cities, Ul’dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa.
