I Am Groot TV Series Releases In 2022, Confirms James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, has confirmed that I Am Groot will hit Disney+ at some point in 2022. The new show based on Marvel’s most famous talking tree will be a series of animated shorts, following Baby Groot as he goes on different galactic adventures. The show was first announced late last year and was teased during the Marvel Cinematic Universe portion of Disney+ Day announcements last month. The show’s animation style has been described as photo-realistic, and there’s currently no word on if Vin Diesel will be returning to voice Groot for the series.

I Am Groot is now one of six MCU projects hitting the Disney streaming service next year. Ms. Marvel, the introduction of the MCU’s first Muslim hero, Kamala Khan, is the only series with a specific release window, as it’s set to premiere over the summer. The shows Moon KnightShe-Hulk, and Secret Invasion are simply slated for release sometime in 2022. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is also coming to Disney+ in December 2022. Gunn has confirmed the MCU’s first holiday special will lead directly into 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3I Am Groot is the only animated MCU project currently confirmed to release next year.

The confirmation of I Am Groot‘s 2022 release came from Gunn on Twitter. I Am Groot was included in a new Disney+ promotional video teasing what is coming to the service next year. Notably, the series had yet to be given any sort of release window in previous Disney+ announcements. A fan tweeted the video at Gunn asking if he could confirm the news, to which Gunn simply replied “I can confirm. #IAmGroot.” Gunn’s tweet can be seen below:

The confirmation of I Am Groot‘s 2022 release is great news for fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. The ragtag team of intergalactic morons hasn’t been seen in the MCU since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, and they haven’t had their own specific title since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 back in 2017. Now, the Guardians will have three new releases over the course of the next two years, with both I Am Groot and the Holiday Special hitting Disney+ in the same year. Considering Am Groot specifically follows Baby Groot, it can be assumed the series of shorts will be a prequel, as Groot was aged up to a teenager for Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.

While very little is known about the I Am Groot series, it’s still exciting to look forward to, as it’s yet another expansion of the Guardians corner of the MCU. With three different Guardians of the Galaxy projects coming over the next couple of years, it would seem that the MCU is only increasing the team’s role in the universe. However, Gunn has stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the end of the story he began with the first film in 2014. This wacky cast of characters is sure to continue to appear post-Vol. 3, but nothing is officially announced as of yet.
