Tom Holland Recalls The Time Jon Bernthal Slapped Him Across The Face

Movies

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland recalls the time Jon Bernthal slapped his face while they were working together. Holland quickly became one of Hollywood’s superstars after he joined the MCU as the plucky Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War. He will make his eighth appearance as the web-slinger in Spider-Man: No Way Home, plunging into the multiverse where Peter Parker will have to face the villains from past Spideys.

Even though he is best known for his Spider-Man role, Holland frequently appears in movies outside of the MCU. In 2017, Holland starred with Jon Bernthal, another member of the MCU known for his role as Frank Castle in Daredevil and  The Punisher, in Pilgrimage. The film is a drama set in medieval Ireland, showcasing both Holland and Bernthal’s range outside of the MCU.

With his latest Marvel movie, Spider-Man: No Way, just around the corner, Holland is busy as ever. This week, Holland had the opportunity to sit down for the show Hot Ones (via First We Feast) for an interview over hot wings. While sampling a variety of spicy sauces, the Spider-Man actor revealed a behind-the-scenes tidbit about working with fellow actor Bernthal. Before a stressful scene they were working on together, Bernthal slapped Holland across his face. Read Holland’s reaction to the slap below:

“I was like ‘Oh my God!’ and it was great, and it worked so well for the scene, but he just- He just didn’t want me to know it was coming. But he properly cracked me one. I look back on that as a very fond experience, and meeting him was you know one of the highlights.”

Holland seems charmingly proud to have been slapped by Bernthal. He explained at the beginning of his story that being “roughed up” before an intense scene helps him produce the right emotions on screen. Bernthal, who has been acting even before Holland was born, thankfully was happy to help. Holland has become known for the vulnerability he can build in characters – a trait which shines in Avengers: Endgame when Peter Parker says goodbye to Tony Stark. Although nobody can discount Holland’s natural talent, his story gives a peek at his process.

Holland’s Peter Parker is characterized by his youthful cheer, but after losing his mentor Tony Stark, Spider-Man has been facing more emotional strife. With Holland’s hints that the newest movie will show a darker side of  Spider-Man and the confirmation of another Spider-Man trilogy, it would be no surprise if Peter Parker loses some of his cheer. Perhaps, Holland asked some of his Marvel costars to slap him like he asked Bernthal. However he does it, fans are sure to see Holland portray Peter Parker’s vulnerable side as he takes on the dangers of the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
