Caterpillar from The Masked Singer turned out to be Bobby Berk, the interior designer from Queer Eye, who revealed that he was messaging his friend and Masked Singer panelist Jenny McCarthy from the set, but she was unaware of it. This hilarious revelation came after Jenny’s multiple wrong, yet very confident guesses about the Caterpillar’s identity. Jenny even brought out the Take It Off Buzzer twice because she was so sure of herself. If a panelist uses the buzzer and correctly guesses the contestant’s identity, they are awarded two extra points, and the contestant must unmask immediately and leave the show. The first time, Jenny decided against using it, which was a good decision because he mistakenly guessed Caterpillar was JC Chasez. The night he was eliminated, Jenny did hit the buzzer, but she incorrectly guessed Jake Gyllenhaal, so Caterpillar did not have to unmask immediately.
Caterpillar came into the show late in week 4 as a Group B Wildcard. He sang “If I Were A Boy” by Beyoncé and received rave reviews. In week 6, he sang, “It’s Gonna Be Me” by *NSYNC and in the Group B semi-finals, he performed, “Friends in Low Places,” by Garth Brooks which was his last performance before being unmasked. The panelists had no idea who he was as evidenced by the fact that Robin Thicke’s final guess was AJ McLean, Jenny’s was Owen Wilson, Ken Jeong’s was Dan Levy, Nicole Scherzinger’s was Tyler Hubbard, and guest panelist Cheryl Hines’ was Jim Parsons. When he was revealed as Bobby, the panel was shocked, but Jenny was especially floored, saying, “Bobby Berk! I can’t believe it! Your voice is incredible!” She also said that she wants to go to his concert, and he joked that he should go on tour with her husband, Donnie Wahlberg.
In an interview with TV Insider, Bobby spoke about how his friendship with Jenny made him worry that she would guess correctly every time she called for the Take It Off Buzzer. He explained , “I thought she was right because Jenny and I know each other. So when she was like, ‘I know who this is,’ I was like, ‘S**t, no, Jenny, no, Jenny, no!'” He then revealed the funny story that he was exchanging messages with her from the set without her knowledge. He said, “She and I had literally been messaging about something a couple of days before, and I was in my trailer on set when we were messaging. But she had no idea that I’m on the same show as she is. I was really glad when she was wrong because I wasn’t ready to go.”
Throughout his run on the show, Bobby fooled the panelists into thinking he might be a boy band member. In fact, for their First Impression Guesses, Robin and Jenny each predicted he would be a Backstreet Boy, guessing Howie Dorough and Brian Littrell, respectively. Jenny’s infamous JC Chasez guess also put him in that category. Bobby was honored by their mistakes, saying, “Their guesses were just all over the place, but I found it a huge compliment that they thought I was a boy bander.”
The Masked Singer is such a fun show because it allows people to show off their hidden talents. Even people who are friends with the panelists can end up fooling them, which makes the show so entertaining. The fact that Bobby and Jenny not only are friends, but he was messaging her from the set without her knowing, is a testament to how seriously the show takes keeping the characters’ true identities secret. This funny story will surely have Jenny wondering if another masked singer might be hiding out in her DMs.
The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
