A clever Minecraft player managed to construct a deceptively confusing maze that relies heavily on command blocks and illusions to keep all entrants entrapped. The best selling video game of all time continues to maintain a strong player base after more than a decade since its launch, and players continue to construct ever more impressive creations, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the title.
There are many unique builds that Minecraft players can construct beyond those of immense size. Functional builds, such as a working Minecraft tank with TNT, can be just as impressive as world-spanning constructs for entirely different reasons. Illusionary builds have also grown in frequency throughout the Minecraft community, allowing creators to blend functionality and design in a truly unique way.
Reddit user neonbluediamond took the illusory concept to the next level by making a deceptively complex maze. At first glance, the build appears to be a simple hallway with signs at the beginning of it saying “reach the gold to win.” Upon entering, however, the hallway shifts and changes seemingly to prevent the entrant from ever reaching the gold no matter how they choose to try. This even includes trying to go around the hall entirely to reach the gold. No mods were used in this creation, which instead heavily relies on command blocks. This creation shares its mind-bending, illusory nature with other fascinating builds, like a recent Minecraft build featuring a glass mirror effect.

Neonbluediamond took some time to explain how the build works, saying it is not particularly complicated, only time consuming. Only two commands, “test for” and “fill,” were used in this construction, and after the player crosses certain blocks, these commands take effect. The Reddit user admitted to following a certain path for this particular demonstration in order to hide the changes from the camera as they unfold. If, for example, the entrant was to simply charge straight ahead for the gold piece, they would see the wall appear in front of them before they reached the end.
Players can pull off all sorts of illusory creations using Minecraft, and it would seem the possibilities are continuing to expand as gaming hardware continues to improve. Functionality, size, and detail are all major components that will improve over the years, which will only keep the game’s player base engaged longer. Minecraft‘s formula is extremely simple compared to most other games, but that simplicity has allowed for a lot of creative freedom, which has kept the title so popular for so long.
Minecraft is available on all platforms.
